Title: Hey howdy hey
Post by: Dr Horrible on September 11, 2013, 10:14:32 PM
Hi, newbie brewer here from Cork.  I've been brewing since the start of the year as a result of an excellent gift from my wife.  Mostly been doing partial extract brews, but just did my first all grain this weekend (the Homebrewcompanys' Brown Porter) so even more excited than normal watching the airlock bubble!  My day job is an engineer so I'm having a lot of fun in pimping up my equipment, in particular my fermenter at the moment, and big plans for more messing around!

Hey Dr. H,
It's a big place, Cork. Where in the County are you?

Riverstick, so close enough to the city for the odd trip in to the Franciscan Well or the Bierhaus, although given the great selection of craft beers in Kierans Folkhouse in Kinsale, I'm tending to head there a bit more often.

Welcome aboard Doc  :)

Keep an eye out on the Rebel brewers forum (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php/board,17.0.html) and Lee Valley brewers forum (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php/board,21.0.html) for upcoming events.

You sound like you've caught the bug? Making the gear can be as much fun as making the beer.

Welcome aboard, I can't believe no one else has acknowledged your post title, you listen to good podcasts!

Thanks!  I'm a big fan of Palmer and Zainascheff, i think both their podcasts and their books are great.  They're into their gear as well, which helps!
I'm very happy with the results of my initial messing around with my fermentor rig, I just fitted a cooling coil and thermowell to it and am getting good temperature control with that setup.  This is just for ales so next step is to get something that might work for lagers, or wait until winter when the water temperature is a lot colder.  No room for a fridge (and even if I did, she'd end up filling it herself with food) so improvising but having a lot of fun doing it.

Despite what people say Stainless Steel carries a massive risk to your health/wealth quotient.

Its like a virus: Its not even contagious - it can be transmitted visually :(

You see a photo or a members bit of shinny stainless steel.

It might only be a polished stock pot or polished corny or even a big mash paddle!.

One look is all it takes - the little (only visible under a scanning electron microscope - but they DO exist) chrome/steel virus worms burrow under your skin and make their way to the desire centre of the brain.

As they pass by the "financial awareness centre" of the brain they plant a time lapse virus. After a week the awarness centre shuts down when it comes to analysing brewery equipment builds.

Result: Total lack of control of expenditure on brewery shinny stainless steel. ( AKA SSS syndrome )

Possible side effects: Can mutate into a PIC/PLC/Arduino virus: Symptoms: Lots of digital stuff

Know Cures: NONE
