G'day all,
I have a problem you might be able to help me with .....
I have way too many hops and I don't wish to see them go to waste. I don't have time to pick dry and sell them.
If your interested in picking some free fresh hops for your next brew, I have lots of Fuggles and Cascade and some Kent Goldings.
I was thinking of having a bit of a get-together in next couple of weeks, where we could -
1) pick hops for your next brew,
2) discuss brews, growing/processing hops, and any other shite.
3) try making hop teas to compare bitterness between varieties, and indoor vs outdoor.
4) sample a home brew or three
If you want to chip in ~€10 euros, I'll get some supplies and we can cook up a storm on the bbq.
At the moment its looking like 12th or 19th October, depend on availability of hops and people.
We had a great afternoon last year. You can read about it here http://www.beoir.org/community/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=6687&start=135 (http://www.beoir.org/community/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=6687&start=135)
cheers

Good man Brett,
Great craic last year.
I'm on for the 19th. Will the hops survive until then?
Where abouts in Limerick are ye ?

Meant to also say is this open to non Mid west brewers ?

They are ready now, so hopefully we don't get to much bad weather before then. Most of the crop is well protected. I think the 19th is better option as it will give me more time to beat down the crop of dock leaves and nettles that are obstructing access.

Iirc Brett is in Birdhill.
Birdhill is in Tipperary, last time I checked ;-)

I sure we can squeeze in a few outsiders if the usual Limerick shyness/apathy prevails.
Some of last years crew moved overseas, but so far we have
Chris
Sammy7p
loftybush ???
qazxsw
johnrm
Hopefully some of the other Limerick brewers might see it in time.
Please send me a pm with your email address because we have a email thread that's easier to communicate with.
regards
Brett

Boy - Ye Limerick people are touchy about your borders ... only too keen to take over Clare ! Are the Tipperary bog lands not good enough for ye?
If I was going to most of Tipperary I wouldn't start from here. I'd drive to Limerick and start from there.

Not touchy just like to know what what :) In facta most Tipp lads I know (5 first cousins included) would have a fit oif you described them as being from Limerick.

Limerick is a small enough county without foreigners encroaching. ;-)
Well, if we are goin to have all these foreigners, (myself included), methinks we'll need some more refreshments.
Somehow today (I'm still not sure how), in-between a vet visit, a village photo shoot, daughters basketball, sons swim lesson, 2 hour bag pack for tidy towns, coaching a soccer team, watching Munster win, & visitors for dinner, I bore the wrath of the missus, and managed to pick some hops and fit in a 50 liter extract brew pale ale. This evening I split batch and turned one half into a pumpkin lager that I have been meaning to try for last few Halloweens.
Busy day Brett, I'll bring a keg and some bottles too for variety.
I should have enough ;). I have a Irish stout and Aussie Pale Ale. Then then the pale ale and pumpkin lager I started on the weekend. Then tonight I found a full corny of ginger beer I didn't know I had.
I always welcome the opportunity to try the produce of other's, so you're very welcome to bring along some samples.
If ye don't mind 'another foreigner' in the group I would like to join ye for this ;D
Brett I sent you a pm

Your welcome. Including you, the tally currently stands at ;
Foreigners Limerick

What date did ye settle on for this?
Looking like the 19th Oct
Yep. Definitely 19th. Everyone's available 19th and I'm limping along with a head cold and just drilled a hole through my finger today - not too big (4mm).
I haven't heard of that brewery mod before.
Hydrometer holder?
Maybe a vampire ale for Halloween ? (100ml Blood with aroma hops ?) :P
Hopefully I should have two functional thumbs for Saturdays hops picking - its healing well and I want assure everyone that there is no blood in my Halloween beer.
really sorry not to be making this one....Limerick ( Birdhill county tipp near Kilalloe :) :D ;D) is only down the motorway....unfortunatly we have tickets for the harvest fest in athy and on sun we have the summer comp and the twisted pepper cup.
Have a great day and great to see good numbers aiming to be there for their free fresh hops >:(
John RM told me bout it last week at the BJCP. So thanks for the offer and for organising the event
regards Bren ( south Kildare NHC)
A busy weekend in Kildare so. I didn't realize we were clashing with a real harvest Octoberfest http://harvestfleadh.com/more-info (http://harvestfleadh.com/more-info).
Ours is more of a backyard BBQ to meet a few like minded brewing friends.
Bono wanted to sing a few tunes but I told him it would just get in the way of a good conversation :P
Do you see the way the NHC calendar has trumped this event in Athy?!
Great event. Dey even had a press launch with free beer few weeks back. I won two tix on beoir web.
So what's the difference between Jesus and Bono, Jesus know's he's not Bono. :P

Jesus Dempsey,
Ever since I saw the arctic pull up in your drive and cover your front lawn in cheap kegs and drive off.. I thought you were Jesus ! 8)
If anyone going to Bretts event from Abbeyfeale / Newcastle West / Adare area would like to share the spin up I will be driving from Rockchapel Co. Cork via Newcastle West and on to Birdhill
We are all set for tomorrow Hops picking & BBQ.
I think we are at about 15 eager starters so should be a great afternoon. Hops and BBQ are indoors so rain isn't an issue.
Final organisations have been distributed by email so if you are interested please PM me, because I'm not keen to post location on the forum.
Another fun day followed by a late night!
It was great to meet up and share some tasty brews.
Many thanks to Brett and Maria for the hospitality.
No prob. I nearly didn't bother this year but glad I did as it was great to catch up with old friends and meet new ones.
We started with a small delay positioning and plumbing up for a bar I didn't use for a few years. Imagine first 10 lads arrived, carried the bar for a few laps around the yard before realizing it didn't fit through any doors. Then, after settling on a position outside, staring at 6 kegs of beer but no chiller and taps operational. :-[ It didn't take too long to get three taps operational - including johnrm's lovely pump action joby that the cat later took a liking to.

After refreshments and introductions we started on the hop picking - we were concerned that last year we didn't finish picking until midnight, although I was reminded that it was more like 11:39pm

We had several more hands this year and I guess it was about 7pm we finished. BBQ was timed to coincide. The rest of the evening drifted into the wee hours.

This morning the 4 stayers woke with clear heads (oh the joys of natural beer) and a big thanks to those who helped clean up. Twas a joy to be finding boxes and bags of random home brew donations that I'll be sampling over next few weeks. For breakfast, we tucked into left over BBQ and demolished 1/2 a cake of gorgeous fresh spent mash grain bread (I believe from Galway lads - thanks)
Anyway - Even after everyone left with hops for a few brews, I still found a leftover garbage bag with 800 grams of Cascade so if Chris, sammy7p, loftybush or Eoink (who weren't present for the weighing and distribution) want some just PM me and we can organize pickup.
Thanks Brett savage day , very enjoyable , glad you like the bread , sampled some very nice brews before heading home - door to door was less than 2 hours , Thanks for the hops they are currently stinking out (in a good way) on a tray upstairs
Thanks Brett for the invite & beers, sorry I couldn't stay very long and sample some more but at least I got a free workout carrying kegs around your garden everytime you moved the bar ;D.
I will PM you to arrange to pick up some hops. I'm looking forward to trying them out as I have never used hops that didn't come in a little foil packet.
Eoink
Thanks Brett, it was a great day picking hops an meeting other brewers - not to mention sampling some great beer. As the driver it was tough to watch all that great beer being drank, next time the car is staying at home!
I used my share of the cascade to make a fresh hop IPA yesterday; it smells great!
