Title: How long do hops last in storage
Post by: mrtickel on October 04, 2013, 08:18:37 AM
Can anyone tell me how long do hops last when stored in the freezer?
Can they go off?
If stored for to long and then used in beer can they give beer infection?

depends if ur talking fresh hops, freshly bought hops or older (packaged some months ago).

Hops deteriorate all the time and they can lose their bittering potential. There is a rating for each beer type on beersmith e.g perhaps 20 % reduction in 6 months.

Freezing by nature should extend shelf life, if not frozen ensure keep the package closed and keep airtight preferably in fridge

maybe someone else can add to this.

Frozen pellets would last longer than cones, methinks.

Turn them into beer and they'll last for ages!

dont really do well over time
I recently used about year old cascade and did not get much out of them.  would have been better using them for bittering.  if your getting little or no aroma off them they may not be worth using in a smash.
