Title: Off to Belgium
Post by: Kieran the Human on October 06, 2013, 05:50:29 PM
So I'm heading to Belgium on Friday for a long weekend.
Friday: Brussels
Saturday: Leuven
Sunday: Antwerp (day trip) - Leuven
Monday: Brussels - Home

Anyone have any suggestions for bars/restaurant/attractions in these cities?
I have quite a bit earmarked already (ie Kulminator&Den Engel in Antwerp and Delirium cafe in Brussels) but if anyone has any suggestions they'd be most appreciated  :)

Hi

In Brussels I would recommend Moeder Lambic, they have two bars. The one that I visited is called Moeder Lambic Fontainas at Place Fontainas 8. Unbelievable selection of beers about 45 taps of all belgian craft brewery styles, and some guest beers from europe. The staff are very knowledgeable. Fantastic bar it was one of the best beer drinking experiences I have ever had!

In Antwerp theres a little bar beside the Cathedral called Paters Vaetje, its got a nice selection of belgian ales and does decent food and stays open late.

Enjoy!

This is great, headed to Holland on the 16th meself and gonna do belgium for 2 days, probably Antwerp as its closest, you can camp for 2.50 for one tent too according to lonely planet. They also list a few places of beer interest elsewhere:

Musee Bruxellois de la Gueze - brewery in Brussels
Biertemple - offy with massive selction of beers in Brussels

I've only been to 2 bars in Brussels as we had about 2 hours to spend in between trains.

http://www.lecercueil.be/  - This is a coffin themed bar. Lots of skeletons and creepy stuff plus the tables are all coffins. It's really dark, they play heavy rock music and they serve their draught beer in skulls. Was cool to visit.

http://www.toone.be/ - This is a bar with a puppet theatre that does shows in the evening but they've loads of stuff to look at (if you like puppets). I liked the place because they had a cat in the bar and hens outside in their beer garden.

Beer selection in both of the above was pretty standard for Belgium.

We were in Leuven for one night and went to the Old Market (http://www.leuven.be/en/beercapital/cafe/oude-markt/) which was really buzzing! Loads of people and loads of bars with plenty of beers to choose from.

Un-beer related - the town hall is amazing. Really intricate design on the exterior.

I always have a look at ratebeer - places (http://www.ratebeer.com/places/countries/23/) for ideas before going somewhere.

I was given a wedgie in La Grand Place.

Then a bunch of us got tear gassed by the police.

It was my stag do.

Ahhh...memories.

Cheers for all the advice guys - pre holiday party happened when I won a 20 euro bar tab for the Bierhaus in Cork for naming their Randall, just happened to be the Randall launch night with Eight Degrees Brewing there. Lots of samples of their beer pre and post Randalling.

Somehow ended up at the Opera in Brussels, sang in Italian and translated into French and Flemish, 3 languages I don't speak - The Maredsous Bruin I had the interval was the highlight :D

All in all Belgium was amazing and I'd walk back there for another Hercule Stout
