Title: Question about carbonation ...
Post by: Jacob on September 25, 2012, 12:41:03 PM
I'm kegging most of my brews but from time to time I want to take some of my beer to fe. party/brewers meetup.
Don't have counter flow filler so pouring beer using bottle filling stick connected to a tap.
It's working fine but loosing some carbonation.
Now ... what about if I'll put some sugar to each bottle and leave it for few days (around 1-1.5g per bottle)?
Anyone tried that?

Have you tried freezing the bottles first? it should help a bit with the CO2 staying in solution...so I hear.

A few tips for bottling 5 bottles from a keg.

Sterilise 5 fliptop bottles - freeze them.

Release psi to <5 and disconnect input to keg
(I am presuming that the beer is at about 15 psi)
Pour out a pint into a pint glass while adjusting the flow rate on the tap to a low setting (this gets the tap and pipes to a low temp)

Fill bottles - I normally get about 25% foam.

leave the bottles for about 5 - 10 minutes

You may have to pour another pint at this stage  ::)

and top up as best you can - you should get about 80-90% full.

As its all real cold you get a little extra pressure for expansion as I presume that will have heated up a little once you at the house party - ok that could be without scientific basis - but it works for me !

I actually dont use a bottling stick - I just pour into the bottles from the tap - but I think I will start using one - its a good idea.
