Title: MCI - Malting Company of Ireland - bagging line
Post by: johnrm on October 27, 2013, 08:19:42 PM
A communication from MCI in the past few weeks says the bagging plant should be complete in about 6 weeks.
We're starting into silly season, so realistically this means 2014.
I will update here if I hear any more.

I suppose that means me then.
I will touch base with them tomorrow, like.
No cork accent here, boy.

Any idea when roughly the next gb will be, just started into my second bag, great stuff. Thanks again to the Cork lads who made it happen last time.

Start an interest list Covey.
Logistics is the fun bit.
Need to see how much a pallet ships for.

Back on topic (ahem)

The latest launch date is the end of January 2014 - I'll update here.

They are still bagging by hand and have started dispatching using freight forwarders with tail-lifts on a small scale. There is still no fork on site.

Chris has suggested organising a drop somewhere more central than Cork for further distribution by ourselves, but as always we are welcome to come and collect at the plant.

Any chance of a bit of PR celebration here?

For Example:

The President of the NHC "Launches the new bagging line" by cracking a bottle of MCI beer over it!

More realistically:

Drop down a case of mixed beers brewed form their products?

I had a call from Chris in MCI yesterday.
Plant is in place, but they need to put a lid on the building otherwise you will have damp malt.
Mid Feb.

He mentioned PRL for Groupage/Pallet or regular courier (name escapes me) for Single bag @EUR10

Additionally, they are talking about reselling speciality malts.
This will mean that you order a pallet of Malt and you can get your specialities, Weyermann etc. in the one drop.
The mix of specialities will depend on demand.

Is there any reason why we can't forward the qty and mix from the last speciality GB to MCI?

I used to drool over:

Hornby shite
Anna Kournikova (briefly)
Minis (not the feckin' BMW ones... this is so not the place for a BMW mini rant, sorry)
Saxophones
Powertools

And now malt! How did they manage to make malt look sexy?!

At present they send 2Kt of grain to the US in containers to one central bagging point and have the extra costs of bagging and transshipping across the US and has made their premium product uncompetitive, the new bagging line will give them massive flexibility in that they can send 20 or 40Fts directly to the final destination in an appropriate time-frame and will ultimately increase their market through price competitiveness and service, fair play to them.

The sheeting for the roof arrived today.
They say end of March, I say mid-April.
Still bagging by hand.

I had a conversation with Chris today.

The plant is currently being commissioned and will be up and running next week.
They will have a stock of bagged malt on hand for walk-in buys.
I imagine this will be week days so may not suit weekend visitors to Cork.

Additionally, they plan a Plant tour sometime in May.

Hi Johnrm

Any idea on prices yet or will they deliver? It might make the next group but easier if they deliver.

I don't honestly know, but I imagine the prices will be the same as before, about EUR20 for 25kg?
Search the forum for one of the previous GBs for an indication.

MCI are close to having a new website in place to allow online malt purchase.

The bagging plant well broken in at this stage and shipping is nationwide.

By Mid Aug MCI will be able to offer their delicious malt freshly crushed and bagged ready to ship to anywhere in Ireland or the UK.
