Title: Help with false bottom and hop filter
Post by: matthewdick23 on October 28, 2013, 04:00:22 PM
Heyup

so I found my MT cracked when I went to brew last wk. sadface.

time to upgrade. I have 2 kegs and 1 SS Pot wit lid.

couple of questions- im doin a 3 tier gravity fed system:
1- and advice on what piece of kit I should use for which part of the system? (ie any advantage in using 50L ss pot from ebay catering guys as a MT over a boiler or a hlt? and vice versa with the kegs)
2- what size of holes should I put in my MT false bottom and in the hop filter?
3- do i remember reading that with a hop filter, you do holes for one type of hop (leaf or pellet) and slots for the other? or did i make that up?

thanks

matthew

Depends

How are you draining?
From the side?, I can post pics of mine!

I used 2mm perforated SS sheeting, brass tank connector and 1/2 copper with a S bend to apply downward pressure.

Works a treat :)

Here you go...

Fitted to back of tap:

Copper with S bend:

Because of the concave bottom on the pot you get very little waste, on mine I get approx. 400ml.
If you were to reduce the dia. of the disc you could get this even lower but you'd have less contact area. I'm happy with mine

If you know any Fitters or Toolmakers you could ask nicely for an offcut of ss perforated!
another option would be to use Tubes ikea tray idea.

Getting the bend on the copper can be tricky to get right, no probs for a plumber.

Hi Matthew

You don't necessarily need a pump, I have one ordered for mine.

If you have a bit of copper bent down and below the base of your pot you'll get a syphon going.
