My friend is throwing out a fridge freezer which by his own words keeps the same temp in both ie freezes, would it be of any use if I rigged up to a stc gagdet I have one spare in the shed, if I keep the response time low could it work without burning out the motor?
Short answer is YES
Sounds like the thermostat has stuck on. Just rewire it thro the controller. The default settings will protect the compressor. But you can always lengthen the time delay.

And for those that know how to eazee peazee but for those that are not of the high trained can do type, eeh Will-D do explain how to with child like drawing and such :)
Answers I like all round :) must check dimensions to see suitability for 60 blue barrels!
I removed a thermostat from my first one and wired it permanently on, then I let the ATC unit do all of the regulation. It sounds like yours already has that done, the one issue I see with yours is regulating the differential between a fridge and a freezer box with only one controller.

as per dempseys post i would be looking at some child like drawings id imagine, not sure which is the best method , i could just wire up stc in a box and plug in and monitor the temp in the fridge compartment , the freezer will probably still freeze so a decent compartment for hops etc. or alternatively bypass the thermostat completely, happy days!
Use the search term 'STC 1000' in the search box in top right corner and you will find loads of topics which discuss such mods like ye are looking for. LordEoin posted a drawing lately in one of the other posts which you should be able to find easily.
The other alternative unit is ATC-800+
