Title: Bottling - how long to leave before drinking
Post by: slick076 on November 03, 2012, 12:28:36 AM
Hi,
I am new to this and not really up on all the technical terms and stages so forgive my lack of proper wording. I had been thinking about trying home brewing for some time and last week decided to give it a go, so  I purchased a basic beer starter kit and got going. I have done the initial fermentation and transfered the beer to a secondary fermenter yesterday. Just wondering how long should I leave in this before bottling and also how long to leave in bottles before drinking. The guy I got the kit off recommended another 4 -7 days in the second fermenter and 2 weeks in the bottles?

1,2,3 Rule
1 Week in Primary
2 Weeks in Secondary
3 Weeks in Bottles

Most don't bother with secondary.
Critical thing before bottling is ensuring fermentation finished by checking gravity same 3 days apart otherwise you will create bottle bombs :(
Make sure they have 16-20 to condition in, not hotpress
I leave my bottles 4-8 weeks min, just find they settle down better. Always save one for 6-12 months and you will taste big difference  [smiley=beer.gif]

Cheers, also looking to start another brew fairly soon are there any kits that taste similar to miller/coors - just a little something to keep the wife happy for xmas?
