Title: What are the Rules importing Hops back from the US?
Post by: Ciderhead on November 15, 2013, 10:42:13 PM
Thought the attached info may be useful;

Had a very nice chat with the Chief Plant Health Officer in the Department of Agriculture today.
Ireland is governed by EU law,
Directive 2000-29 EC / Annex 4 Specifically in this case Paragraph 26

What the directive contains is a listing of all plant materials that are banned, processed pellet or loose leaf hops are not one of those products, hop rhizomes are, and can only be done under licence.

Interestingly folks from St. James Gate  asked him the same question in the last couple of months ;D!

Revenue however is a different story;
There is a Duty obligation of 3.7% which is applicable where total goods exceed the value of €430 per adult.

I wouldn't like to try and travel to the US with hops though!

Not 2013 crop new varieties in suitcase quantities through Dublin airport though, which I can only guess is for some small batch experimentation for new products!
