I find small quantities roast malts work best for a red colour, some will add more flavour than others.
Cold steeping the roast malt will cut down on flavour if you only want colour

I'm still messing around with hops a bit but very happy with the following grist.
It'll be dark ruby, malty, nutty and a bit roasty

95 % pale
4 % dark crystal
1 % roast barley

I bitter to around 35 IBU and lots of late hops, this will give more hop than a traditional Irish red but thats up to yourself.

I'm starting to simplify my grain bills lately and liking the results!

I like fuggles, ekg work well also.

I tend to bitter with magnum a lot, last one of these I brewed I used Bravo 17% aa a touch harsh, but not always a bad thing imo.

At the minute I use wlp028 scotish ale yeast as my house yeast, it seems to work very well for anything I've tried.

Either notty or us-05 will work fine, I'd prolly chose notty from the 2 of those.

Tend to ferment 20-21C for a bit more flavour

I've also done a similar grist with loads of Nelson late and dry which was a pretty decent South-seas Amber ;)

But thats Nelson for you I suppose, hard to do wrong with it

I bought up a fair bit of amarillo, citra and simcoe last year. You can never have enough.

Thanks for that lads got around to it trying a ruby red last week and decided to keep it sample first time.
pale, dark crystal, roast barley as spud was saying.Colour looked great but will have to wait 2 more weeks to see hopefully won't get to much lighter.
think i'll try snuff's Red Dragon for something lighter next time and cold steep the roast malt.
