Folks,
I invite you all to enter the 2014 Liffey Brewers Dublin Area Homebrew
Competition. The competition is registered with BJCP and will be
judged to their standards by a team of hard working BJCP trainee
judges on the day. The competition will run on February 1st 2014 in
the Lucan County Bar beside the Spa Hotel. All are welcome to attend
on the day of judging for a few (well priced) pints and a bit of a
laugh. There is a Dublin Bus stop (7186) outside the door with buses
to/from the city centre every 10 minutes. Routes are 66/66A/66B and
67.
Competition detailsThe competition is open to all. It is limited to 50 entries total,
with a maximum entry of two per person. The cost per entry is €2, and
the winner takes all!

the National Homebrew Club's website.

Yep thats no problem, once the info is present and correct. Entries are now being taken and email entries may be made up until 31st of January
hi id like to enter this will be my first competition but iv got one question, when entering a beer do they have to fit exactly into the outlined ranges for a paticular bjcp category, say if the colour was too dark for a porter would it then be in the specialty category?

If it's a good beer and is only a little out in one of the ranges it should be fine! Re your porter example, I'd have to check but I'm almost sure there is no too dark in porter.
I'd say only call it specialty if it's miles out of the parameters or if you have specialty ingredients!
the srm for a baltic porter by the guidlines is 17-30, my recipe is pushing 60, everything else fits in perfect, how would be judged?

Color is under appearance along with clarity and head, so three components with 3 points available, the most you should drop for not the right colour would be 1 point, so all else going perfectly you should get 49 points with ease!
thats not so bad, cheers for that padraic
Is it possible to change the beer(s) being entered at some point? Obviously within a reasonable time :)

I don't see any problems with that, just send me a follow up email if you wish to change
Brilliant, thanks
Slight addition to the terms of entry - non-swingtop bottles must be capped with plain caps (incl uding markings of any kind) to ensure anonymity
Did I see somewhere that there was a catogory for clone beers?

Are you looking for one colour or something as colour is a giveaway as well?

Interestingly the BJCP allows caps with graphics or text on them as long as they have been blanked out with black ink.
A lot of flip tops have the brewery stamp on it so maybe someone should bring along a black marker/paint stamp.

No, but it's an interesting idea though!
Anyone know how popular clones are in the club do many people do them?
Delzep can you just confirm what Tube said was ok?

The BJCP puts them in category 23. These are commercial beers that don't fit the other guidelines.
As Thomas said most of the GB swing tops have graphics on the tops!
Rather than black marker why not get a sheet of small stcky white circles (lables) and then write the entry number on them?

As some entries may already be bottled, any plain cap is allowed. I'll get some small round stickers for flip tops.
Remember that bottles won't be returned so entering flip tops is not advised
Good stuff thanks for the clarification.
Entries are starting to come in thick and fast folks. Don't be left out.
In other news, I can't see any issue (apart from time!) in emailing scoresheet results for each beer after the competition
Tidied up the original post to include a few changes to entry conditions (changes to entries, using plain caps, and entering the competition with using the excel form)
Delzep,
The Comp looks great ! Well done on the organising.
You put me down for a Judge. It will be great experience for the BJCP exam.
I'll talk to the others in the class on Thursday - see who else is around.
Great stuff thanks for that.
I've now hit the magic 10 judges, thanks to everyone for volunteering their time and effort
Put this into the calendar so its been tweeted automatically by @HomebrewClubIrl.....a few retweets would be nice....
Beerfly has kindly offered to act as a drop off point for the city centre (ish) area - send him a PM if you wish to drop off your beers to him.
When dropping off beers can everyone please put some sort of identification on the bottle (e.g. your name and the name of the beer). Unlabelled beers unfortunately cannot be judged and must be excluded
First post will be updated to reflect this :)
do u have to include information for each beer like its ABV, SRM, gravitys? would these not be needed to judge how well it complied with the BJCP style guidlines?
Category number is all that is needed. If only one beer had all that other information passed onto the judges it would lose its anonymity
Both ABV and SRM would be at best "Educated Guesses" by the brewer at worst they would be pure Guesstimates. A total dweeb could also get the FG wrong.
Don't forget that judges and stewards can also enter this competition (the judges won't be judging their own beer)
Some exciting news of a very generous additional prize coming soon. If you're not in, you can't win :)
Hey guys, is there any collection point in the Cork area?
Lads, what's the story with drop offs? Can I bring it to the brew day or barrel emptying session??
If you need a drop off point for the midlands I can take any dropped to mullingar
I can do the same in Roscrea for South Midlands!!
Certainly am
Hey could you not just have stickied it in the first place!
Prize info leak number 1.....as well as the entry fees, there will be vouchers up for grabs kindly sponsored by HomebrewWest
could be more leaks soon folks...stay tuned

How much!?!?
Final line up of prizes are still to be confirmed, but HomebrewWest have donated 2 x €25 euro vouchers so fair play to them for that.
As I said, there will be more prizes available so get your name down for entry ASAP as places are really filling up at this stage
Well make sure I'm down for two entries !

Still taking entries but spaces are filling up fast
Nice job Delzep in putting all that together.
I'm pleased to announce that we have secured the services of a certified BJCP judge for the competition who is flying into Dublin especially for the competition (and scoops as well no doubt) ;D
All will be revealed soon ;)
ATTENTION JUDGES & DROP OFF POINT VOLUNTEERS WHO USE TAPATALK - PLEASE CHECK YOUR PM'S
Thank you :-*
Folks, for administrative purposes, I'm going to have to have a final date of entries to be Friday 31st of January at 12 noon. Beers don't need to be dropped off by that date (they can be brought on the day), but email entries must be received by this date
Thank you
Any chance of some drop points / person for the whest , dunno know if any of ye dublin folk are down this way the weekend or next week
In case there is any confusion, please place a small label on each entry with your name and the name of the beer so they can be easily identified
Thanks
Oops, Cork entries are in Dubland with Tuberifico already, please let me know if you need any more detail for them Delzep. Thanks
Name of the beer? American Pale Ale etc? Or "imarks show stopper"?
So long as I can recognise which is which O0
Quote from: imark on January 27, 2014, 10:49:31 PM
"imarks show stopper"?
:o
your name and style will do (unless you have two beers of the same style of course)
Thought I was going to have to get creative and come up with cool names for my beer then. :P
Damn forgot to write winning beer on my bottle.
Have to remember to get a bottle or two of the Jaipur early this time :p
We're busting at the seams a wee bit here so I'm going to have to close it now so no more entries will be accepted for the competition as of now
Thanks to everyone for their interest and help organising the event and good luck to all entrants ;D
How many did you get in the end Delzep it would be interesting to know for other clubs that want to hold similar events in the rest of 2014?
Most of us in Wicklow have bottles in the cooker trying to get them to carb for the nationals, and to be honest I didn't realise it was a GDA comp? that might have been a bit of fun on inter club rivalry, do you know the final numbers?
Cork were talking about running their own?
Galway did something last year but under Oslos wing if memory serves?
I think Wicklow should do something as well, just not sure how who what when, hence questions on no of entries, I'll speak to senior management.
Also interested in Toms comments today about matching to a, rather than brewing to a, style.
I must have a chat with Competitions Bossman and see what he thinks we should be doing in terms of style.
Theres one entry from Slovakia 8)
All entries are confidential :P

That's the guy doing the exam, surely.
