Well lads its been nearly 6 months since the first historic MCI group buy(Kudos to the Cork lads). I had 25kg myself and an half way through the second bag. Its good quality and unbeatable value not to mind Irish. So just putting an interest list for any one who wants in. There are 4 types available (all Whole Malt only). The Bag weights are roughly 12kg for around a tenner. This is a members only GB and will be moved to the Members only area later so why not join if your interested, more members means better buying powers in general.
Ale malt (AM)
Larger malt (LM)
Stout malt (SM)
Distillers Malt (DM)

I ask only to be sure of the number of bags I put on the list as I thought the bags were 25kg and I will want 100kg total weight. (That's the max the storage bins I have will hold) ;)

All amateur train drivers here no training required and it's usually the person that asks the question.
+1, I don't have a license. ???
I'd be all over this like a rash but I don't want anyone else catching it - it's real itchy ??? ;
Wexford isn't central to the members in this GB, especially the hovel in the ditch where I live ::)
It's almost 50 bags of grain and I've nowhere to store that much safely :-\
I'm too junior to have such high level of responsibility thrust on me :(

Where are you AJ, you might be able to sort out a few people

Reading this thread with a bit of bemusement. This kind of group buy will realistically only work by arranging the pickup and distribution from the supplier in a single go. Everybody who steps forward and does the logistics for a group buy exposes themselves themselves to things that go wrong. Nobody in there right mind does this for glory they do it out of a shared sense of solidarity with others involved in the group. Johnrm & CH will be beatified at some point in the future for (hopefully long in the future :) ) for their work in group buys. Previous efforts worked because someone stepped forward with a van and volunteered to drive to Cork & collect & distribute the grain to 5 different locations. Storage of the entire amount should not be required here. The model in the past was to move it on to other points as close as possible to where others can collect. Last gb grain went from Cork, Tipp, laois, kildare, Dublin and orders for different people were dropped along the way. Others drive to those points to collect grain for members of their clubs.
This kind of thing only works if people involved are c willing to make pitch in and make an active contribution. Case in point was last Gb I collected & stored grain for myself & other SD members. Prior experience should not n preclude somebody from taking the lead as otherwise how anybody gain experience :)

Short memory there Declan! As someone who has probably done more group buys than anyone else, all I can is where there's a will there's a way. Anyone can do one if they want to enough.
No disrespect intended "your tubeness", only mentioned two previous characters as examples. I doff digital cap to your own involvement. I would hope my own modest involvement in group buys would put me up with any other average member of the club.
I was trying to make the same point as yourself but maybe not as succinctly.
Shanna
MCI are fairly flexible. The last MCI group buy, johnrm collected the Cork/Waterford malt one day, then the following day myself and alealex collected the rest.
@Covey, I can help you out within reason! I reckon I could get 16 - 17 bags into my car without burning the clutch out of her! I can store these in my garage (you know where I am) until someone else can collect? So if I met you in MCI, we could probably collect the whole load between us? Let me know what you think.
Rule of thumb for weights...
An average person is 75kg or 3 full sacks.
A family car will take driver plus 4 bodies, and one in the boot, 2 at a push weight wise. That's 18sacks safely.
Jeeees! You guys take yourselves waayy too seriously....especially after sniffing a beer or two.
I was only being semi-serious ::)
On the assumption that MCI, with a proper bagging line, will be doing 25kg bags, the 49 bags indicated on the interest list makes for some serious weight!!!!!
I only have a Nissan Almera but I'm happy to pick up what ever I can carry from Cork but it's not possible to fit 49 X 25kg bags into an Almera and it wouldn't work out logistically either. I've no problem doing Cork, Waterford, Wexford & Wicklow, subject to actual weight, but that's my limit ::)
Anyway, when I asked " Who's driving this train", I was referring to who has contact with MCI and who is organising collection of monies and payment to MCI and that part won't be me 'cause I'm sober ::)
P 8)
I has a quick look online and priced a van for 70 euro for a day. As I said if that us a viable option for the Leinster lads I'm sure we could sort something out.
The only thing is I have f-all storage here so would need to organize to have drop off points on the day if collection.
I havn't pulled my weight yet on group buys. I only have a car but I can take what I can fit in. I can drop off in Dublin on the way back to Mullingar. I should be able to organise so storage in Palmerstown too
Per my last communication...
MCI are supposed to be live end January. This is Irish so allow another couple of weeks.
They are bagging by hand for now.
They are however using freight forwarders with tail lifts on a small scale. (I imagine that means to the likes of us.)
They might be able to organise a pallet drop.
Pick somewhere that is central, accessible and vermin free, drop there. Buyers ferry from here rather than exercising your Micras suspension between Cork and Dublin.
The Galway run has a channel, just to organise the timing to coincide with bagging.
Cork - One sack Andrew? That would sling over the crossbar of your bike!
As for finance, I put my cash into it, people paid the club including transit cost, I invoiced the club and was reimbursed less my cut. Alex was covered for his distribution costs (Diesel, Tolls, probably a few Jumbo rolls too!)
I made nothing, the club made a few quid.
I have loads of grain (actually, no Crystal :-( ) so I am pretty good for now.

Chris is the chap there, I have just emailed him and I will report back.

+1 CH!
The way foreward is for the regions to order for themselves and a few guests nearest to them.
Then either get MCI to deliver it on a pallet or whatever OR one of the group drive down to pick it up!
I'm not going to read the 5 pages to see who's st the helm, but I'll help by carving it up roughly by region.
I'm not sure locations of 2 bods on the list, the rest I have grouped as I either know where they are, or they have stated this.
You will need the following to progress this...
How many drops.
Where to drop.
Collection schedule.

I'm not going to read the 5 pages to see who's st the helm, but I'll help by carving it up roughly by region.
I'm not sure locations of 2 bods on the list, the rest I have grouped as I either know where they are, or they have stated this.
You will need the following to progress this...

Going to drop out of this list. Going on a bit long and got some malts.
I think local group buys is the way to go. We were talking about starting a list at our last NCB meet up. ( North county brewers ;) )

Probably going to do the same as I have just got myself a sack of grain.
k&L cork 74 (including VAT) euros pallet door to door to Dublin or kildare surely theres a demand for a pallet up dublin direction considering its nearly half price already and <2 euros a bag for delivery surely its do-able? It probable cost more than this for diesel on the alealex MCI run?
Ive just paid 34 euros for 25 KG bag and at the rate I go through grain it adding 30% to my brewing costs compared to the last MCI BUY. Ive no problem with The homebrew shops charging 34-50 euros a bag, after all they are in business and charge a profit, however they have a very decent mark up on it which makes it significantly more expensive that buying in bulk from MCI and distributing ourselves.
Im surprised that there isnt such demand for malt that we are not buying a GB every month by delivery for 74 euros..
what if we had a sealed (mouse and moisture free) grain store in Kildare where we stored a basic stock of MCI malts and topped up with a pallet as required. There must be dozens of ye passing my door every week; distribution in this scenario should be simple.
How many 25 kg bags on a pallet?
The Hobbitses are dropping like flies now Precious ;)
It is a tricky one.
I'm amazed there are so few on here with vans.

Is there any one in Galway that could hold a pallet until distributed?

Maybe HBW :P,
I have a
full 8*12 wooden shed and couldnt guarantee the malt being kept dry - the dampness on everything is shocking - to be fair my house is out in connemara & wouldnt be easy for onward distibution.
How many bags are we talking about for Galway?
HBW now would be taking the ...
actually Im wondering why they dont buy and retail MCI malt and keep something in Ireland. Anyone find anything wrong with irish grown and malted barley? Shocking amount of improted barley coming into Ireland. very good friend of mine is a major supplier of batrley to Minch in Athy. Grown in athy and malted in Athy 10 minutes up the road.
They wont sell us small amounts e.g 1 tonne which is a shame while we import bairds and others of possibly lesser quality than the grain produced on our doorstep.
Love to Know if the Irish retailers of Homebrew will / would sell irish malted grain? from either minch athy or MCI cork?
Tbh Bren, I'm not sure the margin would be in it for them v's scale economics of UK producers :(
Wasn't one of them approaching MCI? Or did I dream that?
Sent from my HTC One
@ CH. Find that hard to believe the new dutch crowd that owns Minch are one of the biggest producers in europe and the grain is goin in to the maltings at peanut prices we are paying 1.50 a kilo and the farmer is gettin 5 cent or thereabouts so there tons of room for dealing with Irish maltsters im sure of that. . and add 150 at sterling for shipping per pallet thats another few quid a bag bargaining power
and btw,
if we as a small purchaser of a pallet now and then can buy at 20 quid for 25 kg of malt and the home brew suppliers are sellin for 35 surely theres something wrong, are they not happy with 17 quid profit +
SURELY
The advantage uk Maltsters have are the massive grain farms from the wash down to Portsmouth supplying them, the scale and tonnage they process, eg the one that begins with b is 8 times bigger than cork and critically and this is the major difference their energy costs
They issue the farmers with the seed and pay them minimum fees for the harvest subject to quality
On the logistics a 1mt pallet is 55 to bring in from the Uk on a full truck
Same system operates here but much smaller scale and although product quality is better economics are not.
Warm feeling for Irish grain is great, and that's why MCI will do really well in the US Homebrew market with their new bagging line.
At present supplying 2 major converters doesn't pay the bills for the volume they produce and MCI in my books are taking the correct approach and differentiating themselves with above median pricing but better quality which will be better for Micros and Homebrewers.
Retail grain currently in HBC is 33 and those sorts of margins are pretty normal for retail.
U MISSED THE POINT TUBE
I know how to run a business and all that goes with it.
Cider said uk producers are too big to compete with. one of the biggest producers in europe is on my doorstep and our barley is at the very least as good as any other in the world.
Leaving aside that the HB shops are in business and have a mark up to cover costs, wages and profit for the business My point is how can the Irish HB shops not afford to buy Irish. Forget the costs and vat.
retail say 35 a bag for standard malt in HB shop. ( im in no way saying they are charging too much)
20 quid retail we can buy from MCI I had a quote from Minch not long back a riduculously low bulk price but we have to buy min 5 tonne on a loose truck load.
So unless the HB shops are buyin for 8-10 euros a bag in UK they can easily Buy irish which was my point. And if anyone takes the initiave and talks about 5- 10 tonne loads we would be using Irish malt that is costing less than 50 cent a kg inc VAT

@Parrot, you've just removed yourself from the list.
That I did :)
P 8)
agree cider, I am very familiar with the maltings workings from the farmer to the malting gate.
MCI are small Minch are not.
Its crazy, I was just tallking to My mate ( very big Athy grain farmer). He has been supplying Hundreds of tonnes 2013 for scottish distileries maltings as well as minch in athy.
And we are buyin in english stuff... I just think it dosnt make environmental sense that so much toing and froing.. be lovely to see us and all the Craft brewers ( u see my point isnt about our measly few homebrew tonnes) start using Irish malt.. Im aware some do and many dont
well fair Flecks to MCI wen dey get goin, hope they make a fortune from their bagging lines :) I for one will be buying our own malt if and when I can.
You are now #2 in the queue ;)

There are two very simple reasons: 25Kg bags and they'll mill the malt aswell.
Yip. Not everyone has a silo or a mill.
