Title: An interesting observation on clear wort
Post by: Spud395 on December 12, 2012, 03:37:36 PM
Been using a pump for the last year but last brewday was the 1st time I got my whole new system running really smoothly.

I recirculated the mash for 1/2 hour or so and ran really clear wort into the kettle.
After the boil I done the same, a good 1/2 hour recircing the wort through the hop bed to make a whirlpool.

Again what went into the fv was almost crystal, the sample in the trial jar had no break material at all.

I was delighted, as this was what I was trying to achieve and curious to see the results in the finished beer.

It's a bit early to say yet as I only kegged today but the beer was super clear again as I racked to keg.
What got me by supprise was the yeastcake, US-05 1st gen and it was like glue to the bottom of the fv, no break material in it just creamy thick yeast. It was beautiful so much so I had to have a taste  :D and 1/4 the amount I'm used to.

I guess a lot of people are familiar with this, I was just amazed and look forward to trying the final beer to see the difference

Yea having a pump around is awesome. Its one of the most useful things to come into my brewery for ages. It also really speeds up chilling. What pump do you have?

I did a party gyle and the second running  beer was incredibly clear with s-05. I think the recirculating through the hop bed/filter did it.

I think you should take some photos and do an article on the pump re-circulation. I have one, but haven't used it yet, so would be interested to see it in action.

Just reading up recently on using a herms system with a pump and double up the coil as a worth chiller, kill two birds. also save me insulating my mashtun as it will more then likely be a keg.  dont think i'd have the patience to do what you done with yours (fair play) all the articles ive read have said clearer wort. recirculating is the way to go!!! another vote for some photos hereĀ  :)

I'll take some next brew or the one after.
I've a bitter and a stout next up, whenever I'm doing the bitter I'll snap a few of my process
