Title: Glass Carboy Delivery Disasters ???
Post by: Greg2013 on December 12, 2013, 01:18:08 PM
About to order my first of two glass carboys from homebrew.ie, HBC and HBW are both out of stock with ages and HBW will not be restocking these until the new year at some stage. Homebrew.ie has stock left but i want to get in before these are gone as well.

That said i am kinda nervous about ordering glass carboys for delivery like this. Some things have been said in the group buy post that has me thinking it is a very high risk delivery. The thing that gets me is that they are NOT insured and if they get broken its tough titty on you. At 35 euro a piece thats giving me pause for thought(unusual for me i know).

Pickup is not an option, i would like to get some feedback on what other peoples experience has been getting these delivered from Irish home brew shops. I need two so should i order both together or seperate ?

Got my first two recently from HBC to conincide with the cider apples group buy and they arrived in perfect condition - very well wrapped up so I'd be surprised if the % broken in transist wasn't minimal

Thanks guys, i cant believe they are so out of stock, they must be flying off the shelves. I do think its a pity though that they are not insured or that the option to insure them is not there with the home brew shop. The thought of losing 35 euro through no fault of your own and having nothing to show for it is a bit scary.

You can claim off DPD. You can claim up to 520e back for damage in transit. Just inspect the parcel & contents when it arrives. Any issues just take pics & make a claim.

That's a saving of 4.65 euro including all discounts over what that order would cost here in ROI. Excellent pricing from geterbrewed ;D

The handle has to be put on correctly and not over tightened
It must never be lifted only by the handle when it's full
Have you bungs?

Oh Geterbrewed when you do order more carboys from wherever consider getting in some of these:

I am sure someone with access to a pro sewing machine, webbing and strong thread could make these up

Eoinmag maybe?

Not a bad price but $40 shipping  :o

Yes i was shocked at the shipping as well, add to that the duty to be paid to customs and you could be looking at 60-70 dollars to get one of these from the USA. I have bungs and stuff to get first but one of these would be better i think for moving a full carboy around if you had to? I have a UK shop looking for one for me over there, have tried the usual suspects in UK and none to be seen. Its not a big deal right now but eventually i would like to have one for the carboys to make moving them easier and safer.

Actually tha'ts an excellent idea. Maybe one for the club to put out some feelers down the road? I imagine there are a few on here that would buy these if they were available semi locally at a fair price?

To be honest I've been asking the wife to get into that product range for ages.

She reckons she's got enough on with the bags, I must run it by her again.

That would be great as there does not appear to be anybody supplying or manufacturing these on this side of the pond. Personally i would prefer canvas straps but that's just me. 8)

If you are willing to wait until after xmas I can get them made at a fair price.

How many types of glass carboy are out there?
I have one of the basket types which the basket has almost disintegrated on from sunlight destroying the plastic at some point.

There is the straight type like in the ebay photo...are there any other types?

I even had the name already...LugaJug from custombiab.

Basically If you can show me carboys, I'll buy one ..or more...as templates and get it started shortly post xmas.

They would be made from webbing as it's plastic, canvas could rot with time and I'd not be into it.

My design would also include some type of padded bottom as I think those ones are too exposed, and I'd also prefer to use velcro to those clips, in case he has patents out also. :)

I would also have a handle on the side for pouring and one on top, so in all my design would be superior.

Again, poor design, the bottom of the carboy is very exposed.
