Title: Polyester as a brew bag material?
Post by: JimmyM on January 02, 2013, 09:20:30 PM
I brew in a bag. I just realised the brew bag I made for my last brew was made from 100% polyester curtains.
Any of the experts know if this ok?
I'm thinking no.
I also made 4 hop bags from it so it was in the mash and the boil.

They are treated with UV additives and bleached so not great  Dump them.
Use the much tougher Nylon painter bags used by car spray bodyshops, you can buy them on ebay cheap enough.
They are food approved by accident rather than default.

There are no inherent toxins there in any great quantity, just not advisable to use them long term.
Always great brews for friends ;)

I just checked ebay for "nylon painter bags", should I be searching something different? I got no hits!

I'm thinking of making a biab bag for doing the odd brew!

here you go

you can get 1 gallon ones as well but i prefer the bigger size as it lets water and hops slosh around, I'm always amazed how much 100g of hops expands to

Cheers for that john boy, think its time for me to build a mash tun anyway.
Padraic, eoinmag uses veoile (??) To make the bags he sells.
Muslin will work too, but goes ragged after a few brews apparently.

I would say they were nylon, I haven't seen then so don't know

At the end of boil, a good rinse air dried and a spray of star san  keeps them mould free

did you see my post on cutting copper with jigsaw?
I bought one of these

dead easy to convert I made a fly sparge for the top of it also out of copper
My brother keeps borrowing it for his camping trips for his beer cans though :(

I think Eoinmag's bags are synthetic velour, but not sure what material that actually is. I had one before and used it for a couple of years, and it was great. I don't think they are taking orders at the moment, due to a recent birth, but take a look at his site for some inspiration.
