I have been trying to "distill" down the BJCP style guide into some flash cards the size of regular playing cards.
See the attatched. xls.
First page is a list of abreviations and ranking method.
2nd Page is the "master data" culled from the style guide. Note it has MY interpretaion of the Malt/Hops aroma/flavour summary and also MY abreviated notes. Feel free to check and/or mod this data. The cards will update from the master data page.
Then follows the style cards in BJCP order, they can be printed out and if you want to they could be laminated and cut up as a deck of cards for the misses to test you on.
The colour is a pathetic attempt to reproduce SRM on the cards!!
The 19 sheets as printed also provide a very brief "cheat sheet" for the online exam!
Comments are welcome!
That looks really useful Will !
Saw this and thought of you poor uckers

So for Bren & Kellie and any one else here is the old .xls format:
These came in really handy when I did the online exam today. Along with the styles some info on how the bjcp rank structure works is handy. Off flavours, mash temps, grist formulation, comparing styles, remedies to bad beers and just a good general knowledge of ag brewing will really help.
A lot of repeat questions and ones to trick you out. Read the questions carefully and remember to scroll to the bottom of each page.
Then you can stick the cert on your toilet wall.
Good work Will.
your style cards where great help for the online exam!!
Thanks Will I owe you a pint :)
Did you pass?
Yes I did pass it :)
Good job O0

Changed your mind on the judging.... 8)
She was put on detention since she failed her exam :o the week before, sent her to her room to study all week and only let her out for the practicals on last saturday ;D :D
She was grounded from seeing her friends and it clearly taught her a harsh lesson. I was going to make her write 100 times in capitals " I MUST TASTE MORE BEER, I MUST TASTE MORE BEER......................... :D
This is where you start running I suspect >:D
ah in fairness shes studyin hard and attending loads of events recently...she will probably leave yis standing on the real test day in a few weeks.
We r in in tasting mode tnite, plenty more work to get through :D
Apparently women have a better sense of taste and smell than men, on average that is. So it's certainly possible 8)
FYI, typo in the Master Data for 1A
FG 0.998-1.008
ABV 2.8-4.2
IBU 8-12
Everything else is sound AFAIK.
For anyone that has Padraics Spiral bound notes form the first session of the BJCP course, there are a few minor discrepancies in the numbers for Category 1A, 1B, 1C, and 3B. I did not check all of these.

Well done Kellie. Delighted to help.
All I've got to do is sit the exam !
So here is version 3:
Change Log:
Abreviations: Added the Cat Names, added the SRM chart.
Flavours: New sheet! Colour coded as follows:
Column 1: Green means the estery/fruity flavours - not neccessarily bad!
Red means BAD things usually
Brown means more normal smells associated with the recipe but MAY be faults
Column 4: Orange indicates temperatutre related cures
Blue indicates Hygiene may be an issue
Green indicates Ingredients quality/freshness may be a problem
Wheels: New Sheet! James' 2 flavour wheels
Master Data: Updated with typos and indications of what we couldn't taste, did taste, and also if what we did taste was not on the BJCP list of examples. Column L highlights what we didn't taste. M was what we did taste but not in BJCP examples
Style Cards: Updated with the Category name and also what was and wasn't tasted (again red highlight)
I attatch the two excel formats, also the pdf on tasting mistakes (highly recommended)
No more updates until after the tasting exam then we shall start to prep for the written exam ???
Hint: We are going to need a bigger boat I mean style cards
Last time the print was VERY small on a single A4. Does the lad with the top hat in the pic have a monocle?!
Great work BTW!

Of Course he does. In the NCB we all wear monocles/manicles/testicles or whatever the word is!
He is more of a North County Copyright thing.
Us gentlefolk this side of a muddy river consider the "(c) text ... 18 oh blah"! rather uncouth in these more modern times!
We prefer a registered trade mark!
[leap foreward to 21st century speak]:
Hence the old geezer with the eye glass
Just had thought that was genius for learning the styles.
Print out the flash cards and use them to play a game of top trumps!
Good thinking Batman.
Not Top Trumps, but I suggested this to Will on Saturday, I believe he had something like this in mind.
Lookie here...

Ah yeah I saw those ages ago, on the interweb that is, not in shops for obvious reasons.
My idea was always to laminate them and cut them up like playing cards!
However for a quick reference to help with certain tasks mine will stay whole.
I will be updating them for the written exam with some more important info like:
"Question: Sugest a recipe for this Cat/SubCat!"
Will need some serious data compression
Myself, Sbillings and Andrew had a long and animated conversation about this last night at the ICB meet.
We reckon it could be brilliant, not only as a way to learn the styles but also as a way to make money. There were drinks involved mind ;)
I can supply the TT boxes my customer makes them ;)
Food grade?
Funnily enough yes and shatter proof which will come on handy when you are in CUH and they are trying to extract with a forceps ;)
