Title: A good Turner! Anybody??
Post by: Damien M on January 15, 2014, 08:49:01 AM
I'm looking to replace a broken part which cannot be got from the supplier as a separate component. Its basically a hollowed bolt, brass/bronze, threaded one end and and number of different diameters and grooves (3) for O rings. Approx 5 cm long 1 to 2 cm diameter

So anyone know an Old school Fitting and Turning company that could remake it for me.

I came across an machine shop in Little Island, name escapes me that do this sort of thing. You should find one locally that can do this.

Carlow Toolmaking Services Ltd can make anything and everything but thats bit far from your place..
Don't know anybody in Dublin or midlands
Are you in a hurry with it?

Lads Thanks for the responses. Intel don't have a machine shop. I'm not in a rush so Carla might be an option as it is not that far of my Midlands to Whest Dublin corridor.

Cheers !

Any chance you could bring it to the Lucan County gig on Saturday?

I have a lathe - whether I'm "good" or not is up for debate. Is it a modified bolt or a one off?

The reason I ask is the screw thread. If its a one off (and I don't have the correct die) I would also need the other (female) part to ensure a fit as lathe screw-cut threads are not as "smooooth" as rolled threads.

Unfortunately won't be at Dodges Demo....... and is not a modified bolt. It connects a swing arm of a kitchen tap so hollow too.

I hate to say it but you might just need a new tap.
I spent a lot of time and effort on a 1/4 turn ceramic cartridge.
I gave up and bought a new tap in the end.

That looks a bit beyond me!

A decent lathe man would spend a couple of hours reproducing that - at what - say €100 an hour plus materials.

A new tap will be cheaper.

Does beggar the question though: How on earth did you break it?

Also if that bits knackered whats next to break??
