Hi NCBers,
Can you all PM me if you're interested in buying some hops?
Will put together a doc with variety suggestions, quantities etc..
Col
Bump. Not much interest yet. This is not committing to buy, rather beginning a discussion.
Send a PM please :)
Just a note...
Could do with more signups to be honest. Not sure we'll have enough people to use up a full 5kg of a single hop variety.
I've reached out to UK Supplier to get an idea of shipping etc.. Also asked about malt.
Will let y'all know soon... and if they're game, will start up the doc to get our basket together.
If you haven't done so already, send me a PM if you're interested :)
All those who've sent me a PM (I think) have received a PM from me with a link to a Gooooogle doc. If you haven't received the link, please send me a PM.
A couple of ideas at this stage
1. Look for value. Will more likely get more takers.
2. Be flexible with your choice. If you can go for Pellets or Leaf, go with the majority.
3. Pellets preferable.
4. Look for substitute varieties - if you're the only one that wants a particular hop, change to one that others have gone for.
5. If we can only buy 3kg of a 5kg bale we may decide to offer the remainder to another club to divy out amongst its members.
6. This is open to a MALT buy as well.
Send me PMs with ideas or if you want to sign up. NCBers only ;)
Colm
We can talk at the next meet up or before about buying and splitting a sack of specialty malt and dividing it up in 5KG lots. I'm sue people would be interested in 5KG bags of crystal, amber , carapils and roasted maybe. Just an idea. That can be sorted out by one buyer to keep logistics and man hours down.
Fair play Colm taking charge here.

Absolutely. At this stage this is a wish list. And don't forget with the malt, the min order will simply be 1 x 25kg bag. So if you only want half a bag, or quarter of a bag... stick that down. We'll see how it pans out.
I was thinking, as a group we may buy a bag of specialty malt for our next barrel brew :)
I like the way you think.
I'm up for lots of hops, grain wise properly just pils and pale.
C.
Then stick it on the google doc.
Hi,
Only 5 people have updated the spread sheet so far. We've almost accounted for a full bale of Citra and Magnum.
Get your name down there!!!
PM with questions
Have added some pellet and a sack of MO.
Looks like we up to about 400 kg of Malt!
***Update***
We're looking good folks. So far we've accounted for 4.5kg of both Citra and Magnum and as Will mentioned 16 bags of malt. Some other hops are almost there as well. So we could be buying 4 or 5 bales.
Two more of you fellas who have said they want in are yet to add to the spread sheet. They've been PM'd (it's that serious!).
Once all 10 people have updated the sheet we'll begin the real selection and confirmation process. We'll look at what the majority wants and may consider substitutions.
If you're a North County Brewer and haven't yet signed up but want to be part of this epic buy, send me a PM.
Colm
I'd take some Citra and Magnum flowers (if available)
Sorry dont have access to google drive at work.
James
Hi all, looks like everyone's got their requests in. So at tonight's meeting we'll make a call as to what we'll do.
It looks like we will be buying the following:
1 x 5kg Citra (Oversubscribed)
1 x 5kg Magnum (5kg accounted for)
1 x 5kg Centennial (almost there at 4.5kg)
I would also suggest that we decide on taking a 4th and 5th bale to share with another club (as in a straight sale of 2kg to Dublin City for example). Looking like Simcoe as the fourth and possibly Galaxy, but we'll decide later on. We may even change our minds altogether, or some of us might take up the rest of the bales. I'll bring a print out of the spread sheet.
From the malt side of things, we've put ourselves down for around 20 bags. But there are a couple of half bags down there. We'll chat about this as well.
Again, this will happen. There is definitely enough being bought here to warrant the delivery fee :)
If ye need someone to take the rest of the centennial in that bale Id be on for it if they're pellets.
*****Big Update. I've added two
final sheets on the spread sheet. If you've lost the link, PM me.
So... These are the order forms. There's one for hops and one for malt. Pricing is a good guess but not final.
The malts are all fine. But I've made some
big boss decisions on the hops. Citra, Centennial and Magnum are all a lock in and accounted for. But we need to fulfill an order for the other hops on the list.
These are: Simcoe, Galaxy, Columbus, First Gold and Hallertau. All Hops are pellets.
- I've chosen First Gold as an allrounder UK hop. Of the UK hops on the list, this one was the most popular. If you'd previously chosen EKG, maybe you would change.
- For a German/European hop I've picked Hallertau Mittlefruh. This is a great allrounder for lagers, Belgians, wheats etc... If you'd picked Saaz, then you might go for this.
I've shaded boxes in blue on the sheet showing my suggestion to some of you as substitutes, as some of your choices aren't available. I hope this is ok.
When we have all filled this in, we'll try to get a buyer for the remainder of the bails that aren't spoken for. Then we'll place the order.
If you've changed your mind at all, just change your choices. On the sheet, can you highlight your choice in yellow when you've confirmed commitment to buy? Can you all please PM me once you've confirmed your selections? Please do so before Tuesday next week so that we don't lose time on this.
I hope this is all ok with everyone.
Thanks,
Colm
Would you not do this off forum?, the rest of us are like Pavlovs dog here ;)
Somehow I got dropped on the Malt! MO back in !
@CH: John, this probably the best way to manage GBs like this:
Public comments but a private google sheet!
Yet again NCB leads the way!
We will be tossing bones to the masses O0
It's alright we do our own and don't want any of your sloppy seconds :P
Come on all.. get your orders in.
Again, can you highlight your hop selection in yellow please so I know you've updated and are happy to order.
Need takers for all those fancy hops...
Hi again,
Still waiting for people to update the spread sheet. Can you all confirm your choices by highlighting in yellow your selection?
We're at 5kg of Centennial and 5kg of Citra. However dropped to 4.5kg of Magnum but I don't see that as a big deal considering how cheap Magnum is.
But this evening I will eliminate anything that has less than 3kg accounted for. Want to get this order done and dusted ASAP.
Thanks,
Colm
yea - any takers for the other half bag of munich - myself and Will are down for a 1/2 bag.
I have spare malt bags by the way.
Fair play. Nearly there.

Yes, we're all good. :)
OK, so I've now "officially" eliminated Columbus and Hallertau as we didn't have enough takers.
I've increased my Magnum order to ensure we got the 5kg, but happy to split it with someone else.
At the end of the day, I'll put the remainder of Simcoe, Galaxy and First Gold up for sale to the general public. So if you want some of these hops, put your name down ASAP.
Colm
Could someone edit the doc and put me down for 0.5 kg galaxy as well. Why not right.

NP. Extended 'til midnight! ;)
We're looking good on the other three hops btw, may not need help consuming them all!
Any idea of a timeframe for this buy? What sort of order to delivery time are we talking?
Where will the malts & hops be dropped ?

I suppose this is where the fun starts. As of this moment in time, we've got ourselves down to take 6 full bales of hops between us. Ridiculous...
I'll get the official quote from the vendor and work out exactly who owes what including charges etc. and we'll get the cash together and place the order.
So I do absolutely need suggestions about taking the cash (maybe can we use the club's facilities)? Can our reps find this out?
Also, if anyone has suggestions about taking delivery of the Pallet, that would be great. Ideally this would be in Dublin.
Interesting point but would have thought using Club Bank account is really only there for the benefit of group buys or events that benefit the club funds in the form of a surplus which goes to the club or where the buys are are open to all members of the entire club.
Not sour grapes, honest.
Assembling funds for a new wickla barrel brew end of march, funds will be in account from everybody before we buy an ounce that way I know we are all committed to the cost.
Point taken John. But I don't see why not. I'll let our skilled, elected representatives approach the powers that be.
Colm are you thinking like Credit Union esque? But they operate like a bank and charge interest?
I can understand its a lot of cash to be upfronting but if you all agree to pay and its being done on a local level to benefit local members not sure why you would need financial resources of the club.
I always felt the bank account was there to stop feckers running off with money or disappearing and a way of accumulating a nominal charge to benefit the members of the club be it competitions, education or even bjcp judges :)
I'm sure that will all be visable in the constitution which will be delivered in the next 6 months.
Lots of these being done already, most not on the forum, Cara did a big grain one and no funding came from the club or funds were gained by the club.
Watching with interest though as I strongly believe yours is the group buy model going forward.
Quote from: CH on February 19, 2014, 11:56:09 PMnot sure why you would need financial resources of the club.
I don't think he wants the financial resources, I think he wants to use the account name only.
We pay the money into the account and then it's paid from there.
I'm sure I read somewhere that we could use the club account for group buys. It did not specified the everyone should be included.
It's still a group buy just on club level.
Have started up a discussion in the members only area about paying for this sort of GB
Right So: (I love the Cork accent! - its very similar to the S.Wales accent)
It is less than 3 weeks to our next meet in the Boro.
We could agree to meet and pay (in cash) for whatever is going foreward (Malt or Hops ??)
If you can't make the date in person, arrange a cash transfer to someone you trust!
If thats not possible then maybe with luck we can put something through the club
What says ye all?
What about or own ncb account.
Indeed a great Idea but who is going to open it?
Two senior club members.

You are only 24hrs talking about this.
Nothing pioneering the NHC has done has ever been easy.
Damn you for your creativity and innovation ;)
Brian has given you the green light and so for big spends pay the Commission and use the club resources, for smaller buys, fund it at your meets.
Please show us all how it's done as we all want to copy your model :)
Holy jebus! I've been busy today and am only catching up on all the politics. I thought as primary organiser of this particular group buy I would say hi... And on this thread where most relevant.
Really appreciate my NCB brothers' posts and thoughts on the other thread. It seemed that I was being attacked for making a suggestion.
I think that meeting up may be awkward and might delay things. Let's have a think about it. There may be options.
Man... Remember when we came here to learn about brewing and talk with other brewers? ;)

Nobody was attacking you Colm, the who what why and when needed to be defined and I would think at this point it has been so show us the way forward.
Sure a bit of tet a tet is good now and again to sort out things. Always emember written threads lack human body language and vocal tone and do sometimes come out seeming harsh :). And what comes after a tet a tet A BIG LOVE IN :-*
Back on track.
I've requested an official quote for the malt and hops. In terms of payment I think it's probably fine to wire me the money.
But we still need a location to take delivery. Post or PM ideas please :).
As soon as I get pricing back I'll update the spreadsheet with individual amounts required. Once everyone is 100% happy, we'll transfer funds.
Colm
Great work Colm, The NCB express is back on the track!
Uh oh!
There may be supply issues for a couple of the hops. Will update later. PM me suggestions of possible vendors if you have any.
OK. So I've reached out to some other suppliers. I thought I'd wait to hear back (and will update if/when I do). But here's the skinny and my suggestion if we go with the current crowd.
BTW I've updated the sheet to add in two new tabs to reflect the below.
Firstly all malt is available. Good :)
3 out of our hops are in stock. First Gold, Centennial, Galaxy... all good.
However we need to find a substitute or wait 'til April for some of the hops. Citra Pellets will be in stock in April as will Simcoe
leaf only. German Magnum isn't available. US Magnum will be in stock in April as well, but costs more than twice the price. I suggest Columbus (CTZ) as a replacement. This was on our shortlist and would be a pretty neat bittering hop.
Delivery will be more expensive if we split the order obviously but I know we all want our Citra and Simcoe so I propose this:
- We see the order as one big order. Take all payment and place order now.
- Merge both delivery costs together.
- We take the malt and four bags of hops now, Columbus instead of Magnum. Citra and Simcoe sent to us later.
- As the Simcoe will be leaf rather than pellets, it'll be 5.9kg. But I propose that for simplicity we see it as 5kg and divide into 10 equal parts
- Delivery charges for both deliveries will be around €200 incl VAT after conversion etc..
- Charge delivery at €3 per bag of malt for 29 bags = €87
- Charge delivery at €2 per 0.5kg hops for 6 x 10 = €120
- We then put any surplus straight into our kitty, may go towards paying for that vacuum packer
Have a look at the spreadsheet. You will see that the amounts that you've originally committed to spending haven't changed much at all. In fact, it's come down for some of us. And these numbers include freight.
On this new sheet. I've increased R@H's 0.5k of Magnum to 1kg Columbus as I know he wanted 1kg Columbus originally.
Please don't edit the new sheets. Let's chat first.
What do you all think?
What sort of added cost would incure if we split the orders to malt now and hops on April?
Quote from: nigel_c on February 21, 2014, 05:41:20 PM
What sort of added cost would incure if we split the orders to malt now and hops on April?
The new sheet includes this cost and scenario. The malt needs to go on a pallet which can fit any hops £110. Second delivery is then £25 up to 30kg. Both ex VAT. The new sheet works it all out using the split I mentioned before.
On Monday I should have an official quite and I'll upload it to our spread sheet.
Looking great Colm.
Well done
Hi all,
I think we're ready to get our moneys together. I've added a screenshot of the quote to the spreadsheet on a new tab called quote. This tab also has your overall amounts listed as well.
The other two pages "New Hop Orders" and "New Malt Orders" show what you're getting.
I made a slight miscalculation on the Citra pricing. Other than that the amounts are as they were last Friday.
I now simply ask all 12 of you to send me a PM saying that you're happy with your order choices and the cost. Once I get the 12 PMs we'll do the funds transfer and I'll place the order.
But I also need suggestions of where we can ship the pallet. Unfortunately I do not have the ability to receive a pallet, so I ask for your help.
Thanks,
Colm
My garage (with a bit of tidying) will take a pallet. It'll only be for a week or two.
Could be awkward getting it up the driveway, but other than that, it would be ok.

I agree completely, it's just if we're stuck, it's there.
12 out of 13 are ready to go. When I hear from the last straggler I'll send on details to y'all to arrange payment.
But I still haven't settled on a delivery point. So far the suggestions have been generous and I appreciate everybody's kindness, but I'm not sure how ideally suited they are as a drop off point for 30 bags of malt. So we have:
- a garage in Meath, which is ideal, but possibly a bit too far away
- a front room in the North County. Good location, but imagine the mess and the hassle!
- a friend's shop. Possible inconvenience to someone not directly involved in the buy
Still taking suggestions. Remember this is your precious malt and hops... :)
Colm, even if we'll have to collect them from Meath, I can take few extra bags and store them in Swords for a day or two.
Heard same thing from Will. However still think that garage location would be perfect as we'll have to cut&repack our hop bales.
From what I've heard wouldn't recommend doing that in a kitchen or living room 8)

Some fine logic there. Do we have a garage further south?
The hops are only a tiny part of the shipment (4% of the entire weight). So they can always be taken after to a site to do the division.
As Jacob said - I am happy to arrive and help with moving and sorting of the grain:
You need a fairly large area to set out the different sacks, then "pick them" into the individuals peoples orders. For this you need space. ColMacs garage so far is the only place that ticks the boxes.
I will then take away the Renault full for the Malahide lads. Tends to store well in the car and acts as a marvellous air freshner.
Big Plus: No self respecting Irish Rodent would be seen dead in a Renault!
So when we have all paid and ordered we can split up the collection and distribution of the sub-lots.
The hops are a different matter. For that you need a clean space plus tables and chairs. Its again about splitting, sorting and packing, labelling and picking the orders. Its only 6 bales!
I will check but I am sure we could use the rugby club as a packing station. We have plenty of Fridge space for the few days and then cold meet up on Saturday afternoon for a packing session! I have a nice room in mind.
Also have a massive freezer for any long term storage!
Payment details sent to you all via PM.
Colin's garage does look like the best bet alright. Hope he's ok with it :)

We can set up and re-pack in the rugby club whenever it suits us!

Pallet arrived at lunchtime today. It's all safely stored in the garage now. 30 bags of malt and 5 boxes of hops.
One bag of wheat malt was damaged and is short 5 - 10Kg. Noted on the delivery docket.
I know how you like pictures so here are a few. Hopefully they attach ok.
I'll be around one of the days this weekend for collecting, she hasn't told me which one yet.

I will come up at weekend and pickup the hops and malts as required.
Can we suggest weekend after ( Sat/Sun 15/16) as a hop packing afternoon in the club?
Can sort out details next Tuesday!
Lads,
I'll be around home at 5pm on Sunday afternoon if you want to come and collect your malt.
Jacob is coming at that time.
Local lads could come any evening. PM me for address and phone number if your coming.
I'll get the list of who ordered what from ColmR.
Bear in mind that one of the wheat malt bags were damaged so maybe the fairest thing to do would be to take some from the other bag to top it up. That way we'll have two approx 21kg bags.
As Colin said, I'll be collecting my malts on S-day.
Can take few bags extra, so please PM me anyone interested.

Just checked google doc, and it looks like we purchased just 3 bags of wheat from which 2 are mine :(
Was there anyone if touch with our supplier about it?
Sorry, Just checked the delivery docket and it does say 3 bags of wheat delivered. So we might end up with three bags of 21.66kg worst case scenario (assuming we lost 10kgs).

Bags to hold 500 gms of pellets ( 60 plus)
Digital scales and plastic containers to weigh the hops (1 or 2)
Super market sized carrier bags for "picking" individuluals orders ( 15 or 20 )
Larger rubbish bag sized bags to take away the carrier bags for local re-distribution ( 10 or so)

Hi. I'm away on hols this week. Will give the supplier a bell next week.
PM sent to all who are waiting on Simcoe and Citra.
I'd prefer to wait for the pellet citra.
Pellet also
I prefer pellets but don't want to wait another 5 weeks so leafs for me...
Leafs will do.
Leaf is grand for me, dont mind hop bags at all.
Just got the tracking number from Colm. The hops are in transit
:) :) :)
As its the AGM this Sunday maybe Saturday the 10th? (Sunday 11 is the Giro D'Italia - big Italian themed day in the club)
Let's do that in the Boro on 13th :P
The hops have arrived!
So we now have 3 balesto pack. We are going to need a lot of bags both plastic and vaccuum.
I sugegest we pack into 250 gm lots as this is much easier.
Leaf hops are a LOT messier to pack than pellets so I'm afraid Jacobs sugestions is out. I suspect this Saturday is too soon as people with machines may need to order bags.
BTW: Bags work out cheaper (and LOT easier) than buying the roll!
Rember also to get re-imbursed for the bags from the club coffers.
Just a heads up: I have at last ordered vac bags (and I couldn't resit - A vac machine for me ;) )
And another: Please can you update the barrel thread if you are interested and also if you are not. That way we can move forward with this
So the bags are here we have access to 3 machines!
As next weekend is a holiday weekend and James is off using a coolbox for its intended purpose ??? may I suggest we meet the Sunday after (8th) in the club at about 2pm?
That is nicely just before the next meeting - great for distribution logistics.

Looking good guys.
See you at around 2 in the club.
BTW: We have nor been invaded by knackers: its the Caravan Club of Ireleand (Leinster Branch) in our car park.
How sad is that?
Shit forgot about this sorry, very late night last night and asleep all day :'(

Hahahaha :P It's still Saturday and we're going to meet there tomorrow :D
D'oh, my head is still a little fried.
As it happens I may not be able to make it tomorrow. Missus is going to the match, but I'll drop out the box of gloves.

Teacher Teacher Cahalbrua is still drunk. ;)
Can someone also bring sharpies (perm. Markers)?
I will bring some
Is this a purely sober affair? Cycling over myself..
So a great days packing!
3 bales of leaf, 3 vac packers, 7 peoples all done in not short of 2 hours - with a nice tea break!
They are packed in 100 gm bags!
@ColmR: I have yours for Tuesday (IIRC ???)
Some free stuff as well!
I have cathals - I got 'dagger eyes' when I brought those bags into the house -
Highlight had to be Ghostbusters blasting out on the speakers !
Well done Will for organising
Lads, Have a look at your citra hops and check if the seal is alright on the VP bags. Mine are all blown. If you have a vac packer you may want to re seal the bags.
