brewday centennial sexyness
Bells two hearted ale, Centennial all the way apart from a little cascade and centennial DHing, entering into Nationals and will be curious what judges comment ???
Just figuring out the photo upload system so it might take like....forever. Getting equipment ...recipe...yeast starter ready , one step at a time. I used 100g lme with 1 litre boiled..colled water. Added wlp002 and bunged it all into ferment fridge.
It just picked it as its close to ingrediants i have in store. Im not good enough for any comps yet maybe in few years
Just quick run threw my set up pics allways good
grain sorted and ready for crushing in the morning....100g husks for mash also
I think im ready for brewday. I have brewed this recipe few weeks back and it was good but i have a well and water is hard as nails so i had my water tested before xmass and want to brew this beers again and see what the difference is after water is treated. Any tips or comments welcome
We all talk to ourselves on here!
@#4 If it tastes ok enter it.
There were some absolute shit beers entered last year that scored 13, but those beers got feedback to allow the brewer to come back and brew good beer, the competition is being run to allow members beers improve year on year.
Enter your beer!
Its the next step for sure. Taught i might join a local club and if i dont poison any of those guys im good to go i'd hate to kill a judge and ruin everyone elses competition day :)
crs added to liquor and pics of ph before and after. I used to add 5.2 before i knew my water make up and i read that this only made my water mineral content worse. With ph strips at the time i also noticed no difference in ph
ph gone down
pre-heated mashtun with hot liquor via sparge arm help clean and particles i missed and flush to drain. I have temp controller on liquor tank help me get correct temp but most handy thing is i can leave it and no fear of boil over if im gone to long or over shoot target temp
You probably already know this but it's the pH of the mash that's important, not the pH of the strike water. Have you calculated that when the grains and water are mixed the pH will settle at about 5.2/3?

Don't worry about that We all sign a legal disclaimer exonorating BJCP and the competitors!
BTW: What is the Density Meter you refer to?
lol love it
Getting to that.... pics worth thousand words ! (density metre )
got hops to weight all go here...PANIC
You really do if its a BJCP sanctioned exam.
Is the meter electronic - a lot of people have been looking for something that can be used in situ and over time!
It is electronic. Panic stations here sorry cant type fast too much going on you know what brew day is like plus kids and wifey in ones ear !. hops weighed and marked as per recipe. plus camera takes some pics slightly over 1000kb so have to retake pics.
epsom salt weighed in and table salt for boil. some say add to mash some to boil. i go for boil. AHHHH mash time done more panic. sparge water ready at75.6
Oh the joys of documented live brew days :-)
lol my last doc brew day panic with this photo typing lark i feel like opening a beer :'(
check plato against sheet
i stopped wort runnings as it hit low og and added water to bring preboil vol to 40 ltrs. pre boil og target was 1.038 in plato 9.5 i hit 10.7
rolling boil

When you are finished tell is more about this piece of kit
took ph reading of boil worth
anton par density metre....hand held battery operated.....i think they are expencive.....simply sucks the sample up and gives you density of a substance like wort..petrol..oil etc in plato. adjust for temp also.
and.....as tradition goes....PROST especialy for those stuck in work today :P
time to fill carboy.....the trick is to control cold water in to chiller and hot wort out into carboy....i control this with valve on inflow and outflow....very important with this system is to have a thrumometer as you will need both hands on the valves so no way to hold a hand help temp prob in the carboy.
Takes 5 mins to cool from boiling to 20c best bit of kit i ever bought and 100% that wort is sterile ! I added yeast no pic and then put in oxygen airstone. I placed it on end of stainless pipe as i found when connected to platic tube it tends to try float upwards and im not getting oxygen all the way to botttom but prob no much difference in the scheme of things
Thats it all done ...time for majic to happen in fermentation fridge. I think i should have made the starter sooner but we shall see there is always something to go slightly wrong
So thats that hope you enjoy as much i enjoy looking at other peoples brew days. I have to check my sight gauge on boil tank as i usualy end up with approx 3 litres wort left maybe due to boil off issues or i did not calibrate it correctly. secondly figure out the camera and try use spell check when posting lol
By the looks of it you had a fun day. :)
Thanks for sharing with us. Hope it turns out well for you.
Now then, Before anyone wets themselves as to the fact that someone has at last found a digital hydrometer:
SERIOUS MONEY ALeRT
See http://shop.anton-paar.com/ewr-en/measuring-instruments/dma-35-portable-density-meter/dma-35-standard.html
For €1849 notes I may just double that and get my UV spectrometer!
And that is the standard model!
So its back to the refractometer on brew days for me :(
I think I seen one for 1200$ but Ye expensive ! Just incase anyone thinks I'm minted btw Im lucky to be given it on extended infinite loan :)
Holy Uck!!
Jasus. I bet even the rich fella that owns the internet would have second thoughts about buying one of them.
Looks great though.
I feel bad now maybe I delete pics and forget we ever heard it existed ? It doesn't improve flavor just time :-[
Naw boast away we'll get ye back :P

I feel bad now
Too late damage is done :)
My 10 dollar refractometer now has an inferiority complex.
Lol....in that case..... when I walk towards wort I used to say awww this will take ages and I will not get good reading plus I'm gonna smash it when it drops :'(......... now it's like.....Hello Wort.......CHIPAW.....Density metre muhahaha 8)

Was that not 10 dollah and came via a geisha :P
Thanks for the pics Buddha. They kept me entertained today at work. I like your setup. The thermometer thing on your cooler looks cool. I'm tempted to invest. As for the density thingy, I'm not the jealous type. Unlike some of the other bitches on here :P :P :P
He's obviously loaded, look at all the Dymo tape he goes through!
Unless all the cups in the house have a unique ID...
We're all loaded to a degree John. Anyone who says they brew to save money is a liar :P I haven't saved a bob since I started brewing anyway. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?
A 1 to that I am glad my wife does not know how much I have spent. If the wimmon start asking questions just casually refer to some of their favorite spends. >:D
lol the tape on cups was for illustration purposes i usually use tin foil and my wife was not happy i put hops in the kids plastic cups. The thrumometre is the buisness but i should have looked into it further as its basically one of those temp strips stuck to a pipe which your wort flows threw ! So hope i just saved you money :) I dont think id put the temp strip onto plastic tubing id put it onto maybe small lenght copper pipe or something.
My wife knows as i ask for the expensive stuff for xmass or birthdays but i keep quiet about bits inbetween lol

Why didn't I think of that? That's genius 8)
@beer Buddha, if you use the tapatalk app, it's much easier to upload pics from your phone :) Tapatalk will reduce the size of the pics for you.
Ye it is genius but I only figured it out after I spent the cash :'(
CH was also recommending tapatalk....... Will sort it out for next post cheers.
