Title: Hop screens in ikea
Post by: admin on January 26, 2014, 10:03:40 PM
13" for €3.50. Wedges nicely into my 33l bucket/kettle.

Perfect for pellet hops.

Only looking at those last Thurs, either as a HopStopper clone or in conjunction with some s/steel mesh.

All you need to do is think of a way to tack those 2 together? What about food grade silicon tubing to keep them together or get somebody to spot tack it?
Then you could have a central feed from a threaded pipe with threaded washers to keep screens apart in the middle and holes drilled through it to allow continuous flow

What is it actually? I'm sure Ikea, brilliant though they are, haven't moved into the homebrew scene.

It's a frying pan guard. I saw one up in Ikea last year and bought it with plans to filter hops too. I now use it as an anti splatter guard when making tomato sauce  ::)

Do you not just get it all over your jumper and throw it in the wash?

So 13" fits at the bottom of, say, a Stainless Steel Kog?

I bought a couple of these from Homestore and more last year.  They wedged nicely into the bucket boiler but popped out during a vigorous boil.  I think they will require some kind of modification to keep them in place.  The homestore and more ones were really cheap though, so they warped and are rusting now.

Be careful with these as I bought them as well for making a hop stopper and although they say stainless steel, they rusted. >:( Left them to soak in water and after a day or so lifted them out of the water to find alot of rusty water and the mesh quite rusty looking.

r u sure they were ikea?

Like my T-liathrodi from china, I sprayed with h2o2 and left them, at same time I sprayed a normal 12 mm bolt. next day bolt rusty and the liathrodi was perfect. Same with the IKea mesh I got few months ago, there are perfect stainless steel.

I suggest if something is sold as SS and rusts bring it back for a refund

I've been looking at one if these for a hopblocker style filter. Have a ss small cup sized pot. I believe it came from a restaurant that serves those thick chunky chips. I'm thinking of rapping the pot in the mesh from the splash guard. A couple of large jubilee clips will keep everything in place. Bit if plumbing and you should have something similar to the hopblocker.
Will post pics when I get around to it.

I have recently been using something like that myself.

I got a cheap one from Homestore but it was not stainless.

This one was more expensive at €9.99 but is stainless so no rust.

It works like a charm.

Following on from Pob's post!

We had a brief chat about this today.

As it happens I use perf. stainless as a hop stopper. I was kinda worried about weather it would take pellets.

So, this is what we came up with.....

To remove the handle it's a good idea to drill out the tack welds, they should be fairly visible as scorched/ shaded marks.
For this I used a 4mm bit. Be careful not to let it slip and take it easy, light pressure and slow speed. you'll know when enough is enough.
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Ikea%20hop%20filter/th_IMG_0851_zps67aa0d37.jpg) (http://s1049.photobucket.com/user/DamianFahy/media/Ikea%20hop%20filter/IMG_0851_zps67aa0d37.jpg.html)

The handle should easily pop off!

(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Ikea%20hop%20filter/th_IMG_0853_zps537dd389.jpg) (http://s1049.photobucket.com/user/DamianFahy/media/Ikea%20hop%20filter/IMG_0853_zps537dd389.jpg.html)

You can see I drain from the side and use a pick up tube which is held on to my perforated stopper with a tank connector.

next up was to drill out a 22mm hole in the centre of the small disc. I started by finding the centre and drilling out a 4mm pilot hole.
I chose not to use any cutting fluid, take it slowly and apply a constant downward pressure. you'll know when your going too hard, be careful when you meet the mesh between the discs!!!
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Ikea%20hop%20filter/th_IMG_0854_zps4f3d43b4.jpg) (http://s1049.photobucket.com/user/DamianFahy/media/Ikea%20hop%20filter/IMG_0854_zps4f3d43b4.jpg.html)

A quick lick with the flap disk to remove any burs.

By pure chance my stopper is a couple of mil narrower in dia.
I decided to fit the screen on the underside to allow for downward pressure creating a nice tight seal.

Hop stopper fitted

To test, I used last nights hop remains which I saved for this very purpose.
Added10L of water and poured in on top of the newly fashioned stopper, opened tap and out flowed 9.75L of funky old wort. I poured back in 3 times, 9.75L every time

Looks promising.....

Sorry about all the photo's!

Does anyone not consider a simple, reliable and effective muslin hop bag for 3 euros? ;D

all the ss stuff is great but we could be brewing and or / drinking beer while all this is being constructed ;)

or this method? http://billybrew.com/hop-filter-build  I now have a ss version of it

The problem with muslin hop bags is they don't keep in pellet sludge, besides it's never about the beer it's about the bits :)
Nice job Damo
