Do you perform one of these to test for starches at the end of your Mash?

Ditto here regarding the lost Iodine bottle. Now you made me start thinking where it is now so I better have another coffee and start the search ::)

I always do one whenever I divert from a 'standard mash' ( 90 mins at 65C)

Can we use those iodine tablets Fianna Fail sent out in 2002 to save us from nuclear attack?

Did you not take them just in case?

I used to use Iodophor as a tester. Gave a very clear indication of "mash is done". I don't bother with it any more though: I ran out of Iodophor and Starsan is useless for doing an iodine test. ???

I'm surprised more people aren't doing the starch conversion test. I usually get negative results on the first couple of samples I take after an hour has passed. It's cheap and simple to do...only drawback is that it will extend your brew day.

It's a pain in the neck specially with stouts, porters and other non blond beers :/
To see test results you should add roasted/dark malts after getting positive iodine result.

I've used a white plate to test dark mashes. I put a drop of dark wort on the while plate a a separate drop of iodine. I swirl these together and if there is starch present, even for the darkest mashes, it will show purple against the white plate.

Another tip is to use a piece of chalk to do the test on. It works like a sponge and the results are pretty clear.
