Are we sticking in a bottle to the national??
Who is his first choice
Ah do you don't know how it will be judged on the day!
I was told the Loafey Brewers was very good?
Ours wasn't carbed either when he tasted it :P
When do the barrel entries need to be in? We should taste a few of ours and choose one to enter.
thats just my personal taste, the judges could be looking for something completely different
We should all put them in. Apart from the bragging rights, it will also mean that whoever does win (assuming one of us does and not another barrel aged stout) can go over their process with the others and we can all learn from it.
I'll crack one open tonight and get back to you
What's the story with our entry?
I suggest since there is no answer yet that we bring samples to taste on the 8th?
What you think?
Ha? Did we miss the entry date for the barrel competition?

I asked when this needed to be submitted on post 6 of this thread. So have we missed it now? I'm confused.
I blame the homebrew for the confusion and the thick wiry hairs growing out my ears.
You haven't missed the date, please decide your entry and get it to Rossa or me before the 17th if you can?
We will investigate the suspected entry and advise, we were pretty clear as to what would happen if barrel entries were put into the competition.
As most of us are brewing together on 8th let's choose one of the beers then?
We need to get our bottles in for the competition in the next few days if we're entering. Any suggestions?
I know we tasted my half filled bottle which obviously was lacking carb, but I had left with Tube another 3 full bottles. Try one full one which should be fine and yours and send something down.
Please lads as I want to collect your entry next Weds

That was the tarry stuff that nearly made me yack ;)
Not my bag at all, but good luck with your entry lads, it seems a few of you like it anyway.
Check mine tomorrow if u want.
Pick which ever one is best and I'm happy to go with your selection.
It shouldn't be heavily carbonated in my opinion. Just enough.
Anybody else got one they think is good candidate?
I agree with Mark, it shouldn't be overly carbonated but for the comp this is a benefit since while the judges are deliberating, the beer is getting to the right level. ;D
Decide and stick it in. I'm happy whatever is decided ::)
FFS, It's a bit of craic. Stick one in.
Sweet Jesus...

Sweet Jesus...
we'll definitely have an entry.
I'll check mine later. It seemed perfectly carbonated to me the last time I tried it.
Can I just bring it down to Cork on the day if it's okay?
Is JohnRM in charge of Cork?
He is, just sent you a message, cheers.
I'm good with that Reuben.
Jesus I'd love to taste the others.. Ours was class.. First must be unreal
Did we win best club?
Yes. Looks like it. Don't know what criteria is though.
Epicness

Judges apparently looking for whiskey, but we deliberately left our's to age out.
Hi Tube,
Did ye have much whiskey in your barrel? We had about 1/2 litre in our barrel that is still sitting on it and I would be curious to know how your barrel compared to ours?
Shanna
Open top bus to the LC tomorrow
Hi Tube,
Interesting as ours has been in the barrel since June of last year, almost 9 months in total. We had about 500mls of 60% whiskey but without a doubt the barrel itself must have held some more in the timbers. Our barrel was a 220litre monster. The most recent taste I had from it I thought the whiskey had almost disappeared but CH reckoned there was a major bang off it. Shows what I know ::)
Shanna
I think the whiskey is quite pronounced in the liffey barrel.
I'd check.. but I'm busy celebrating my second place with SCB :-)
Good lad.. ;) :)
Gold=5pts
Silver=3pts
Bronze=1pt
Speculating
It's surely weighted on achievement

Boo hiss. Placed 4 or 5 out of 5 ::)
8 entries in total which were all barrels
Barrel comp was a straight 1,2,3 no feedback all judged by 5 commercial brewers
Coincidentally, Dr. Homebrew podcast on Friday covered barrel aged stout. Worth a listen if you want to hear how the score a beer on it. Note, the complain about not enough dark roasty malt and too much whiskey...ho hum! ::)
I would have thought the lack of any vanilla from the oak would have been the biggest failing of all the barrels. No mention of that from the judging though?
True. I was going by this post http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,5774.msg77914.html#msg77914 (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,5774.msg77914.html#msg77914)
It says looking for whiskey and some had too much dark malt. It's all I have t go on.
I know Tube that you asked on another thread about the whiskey character of our brew, as you didn't seem to have much, or maybe that was someone else. Anyway, ours had a lot. Too much I thought to begin with, but it's starting to mellow now, but will always be there.
When you got your barrel, did you take out much whiskey before you filled it with beer? Ours had about a litre and a quarter of whiskey in it, which we removed, so I guess that's why we got so much whiskey character and maybe others didn't.
I didn't hear much feedback from the barrel judging either, but did hear they were looking for whiskey character, so that could have helped the Rebel cause.
I think the key to vanilla is getting fresh barrels, not making the beer too strong, not leaving it in there too long, and not leaving it too long before drinking. To be honest whiskey stout isn't my favorite style, but the best one I ever tried was the first cask of the jameson that the well put on at xmas for the party. I could really get the vanilla, but by the time I tried a cask of the same batch at the cask fest in feb the vanilla was gone.
