Thinking of doing something a bit different for the next tasting. Would anyone be up for doing this - http://www.bertusbrewery.com/2013/03/dry-hopped-bud-light.html
That seems an excellent way to educate the old palate as to what single hops really taste like when fresh and dry hopped.
Just like the Siebel off-flavours kit but a fraction of the cost and about a million times more enjoyable.
Rather than do 12 IPA hops like they did would suggest a broader palate of hops.
Course all depends on getting the pellets in the first place. You only need a small amount for the "hop bank" and so a group contribution would be the way foreward. Of course you could always buy in the more exotics.
Or even better get onto the hop suppliers and suggest they produce a testing kit of say 50 gms of all their pellets!
The only cost to them would be labour, a few ziplocks and postage!
I have simcoe, zeus, cascade, citra and I think centennial pellets I can use.
What can anyone else bring to the party??
Ahtanum, chinook, Dana (not the singer) :)
Bring her along...she can legally buy the pints ;D
Liffey brewers roadtrip :)
Apollo, Summit, Exp. Grapefruit, Mosaic, Falconers Flight, Sorachi Ace to contribute.
Excellent! Any advance on those?
What's the blandest beer on the market? Coors light? Molson Canadian?

I think Bud Light is the wateriest. Might be interesting to throw a few different beers into the mix just for comparison too.

I think keeping the base beer consistent would make tasting the hops all the better

Oh yeah I just meant as an aside you could try the same hop in a few different beers just to see if there's much difference.
All the same to me...cheap neutral beer will be grand.
How bland are those stubbies in Aldi/Lidl? They're cheaper than Coors etc.?
Turns out I have leaf centennial so scrub that off my list :(
So far we have
Citra
Cascade
Simcoe
Zeus
Ahtanum
Chinook
Dana
Apollo
Summit
Exp. Grapefruit (what is this???)

They have a little bit of flavour to them. Spread the cost and it should only be a euro or two each.
Also, I have Amarillo pellets if you'se want me to bring a couple on Saturday. I can check Tesco tomorrow and see if they have any deals on as well for ye's.
Experimental Grapefruit... See here http://www.yakimavalleyhops.com/mobile/Product.aspx?ProductCode=HOPSEXPGrapefruit-8oz (http://www.yakimavalleyhops.com/mobile/Product.aspx?ProductCode=HOPSEXPGrapefruit-8oz)

HOPSEX in that link :o
I have centennial pellet :)
Well thats 15 varieties we have....could do 5 per meeting for the next 3 meetings?
This sounds like a great idea. Not sure how my calendar is looking for March so won't pick a date yet.
Could the club fork out 20 quid or whatever it is for a box of Coors Light? It is educational after all. Could invite those yobos from the 3 other Dublin clubs along as well
Well I'll take 4, Dempesy is 4, Mark is 6 and one for yourself yeah?
Worst homebrew on the night has to take the rest of the unhopped ones home >:D
So are we going ahead with the hop tasting experiment?
Yes
We seem to have a tie on the dates. :)

Needs to be a bottle, and the blandest available. Apparantely the Aldi and Lidl stuff has some flavour
Worth throwing this up in the Beer Education section and opening invitations to everyone else?

;D
Can everyone who turns up bring a 1 litre jug that we can decant the hopped crap beer into. This means we can mix and blend the single hops easily and cheaply as well as sample the single hop aroma/flavour
And lets not forget the vomit bucket :P
Since we are looking for a bland beer Tube do you have one that you may have brewed latlely :P :-*

I'm interested. Could probably make any of the dates suggested..

Oh Feck... It's closed. Let's go 20th
I did but it's still tied :-)

Sorry lads, judged a pile of bland beers lately so I've had me fill.
?? who said anything about judging? (although...I'll tell ye later)
anyway...poll is still open
I could maybe go to this if it's on the 13th or 20th. :)
Or even limit to 1 per person. No point blasting our palates and not tasting the hops.
I'm bringing two
And is it 4 hop varieties on the night? Can we set an agenda for this one to avid the usual free for all?
How does this sound so?
7:00 - 8:00 Turn up and get the tasting set up (decant beers close to 8...ask to put in fridge or put cling film over them and keep outside, glasses, labels etc.)
8:00 - 9:00 sample each beer/hop variety (gives about 10 minutes per hop)
9:00 - whenever for homebrew sampling
12:30 - 5:00 Lapellos
Yeah...the usual schedule after the hop tasting
Sound, I'll see how much a box of Coors or Molson Canadian is in Dunnes in the next few days
or Dutch gold :)
Has to be bottles...
Actually I suppose cans gently poured into bottles might work. Dutchie isn't all that bland though...has a strong ganky taste

Hops spread out over 3 tastings (Mar, Apr, May) should bring us nicely up to the June ding dong.
Ding dong?
I'd say stick to bottle to minimise carbonation loss and oxidation. How long do you leave Hops in the beer?
Molson Canadian is €20 for a 24 box of bottles in Tesco, Coors Light is €22 for a 24 box of bottles. Is Molson is brown bottles? I think Coors is in clear glass, so maybe Molson is better to use
