Title: gonna brew soon....
Post by: newToBrew on February 19, 2013, 10:42:09 PM
got my bag of irish malt today - (thanks Ciderhead! )

between that and the cascade I got form the group buy - I'm itchin to use them both - real fresh ingerdients

thinkin of doin a 10 gallon batch - double brew

I also have 100 grams of raku and amirillo hops - vac packed - have em about a year

thinkin ofg cascade 60 - 30 15

and then
batch 1 100 grams of raku at 0 mins

batch 2 100 grams of amirillo at 0 mins

or
batch 1 or 2  - 50/100 grams of cascade at 0 mins
coz of teh whole its all fresh ingerdients thing

what you think - what would you do  ?

Keep 50g of both amarilllo and raku and dry hop with them.
Also in my opinion 50g for 0' is too much for 5g batch.
Use 25g for 15' and 25g for 0'.

i've never actually dry hopped before - something I read before about grassy notes keeps putting me off also I remember reading/hearing that the flame out hop addition is pretty much the same as dry hopping - but without the risk off the grassyness

might give it a shot though - I usually try something new on each brew so that could be a good one

Never had any problems with it + can't agree that the flame out hop addition will get u same results.
I'm usually using some aroma hops on flame out + dry.
Also, can't imagine brewing big IPA without dry hopping.

I can't argue one way or the other as I've not tried it yet - really just goin on idle gossip !!!

thinkin about it - I reckon I'll give it a shot - I guess its one way to use up whats left of teh 100 gram packets once I open them

so how do you go about dry hopping in general ?

I've read of guys buying those steel Tea Leaf Ball Yokes

Others use Muslin Bags, while others just fling in loose hops ?

I guess I would probably Boil a Muslin Bag in water to sterilize  and then fill with hops - fling it in

Or just fling em in loose I guess ? I mean they float right ?
they wouldn't clog up my auto siphon at the end of secondary Ferment ?

- I use the Vinegar & Bleach Mix  as a sanitiser so wouldn't fancy soaking the bag in that and adding it to the Secondary  - Don't know why tbh - I mean I do use it on the equipment as a no soak sanitizer...... but .....

Put them straight into fermenter and use hops bag to siphon it out.
That's my method :)

much better circulation that way, I use nylon mesh over the autosiphon
although I am coming more and more around to big late additions rather than dry hopping

No disagreement, I'm right  ;)

The thing is to accept each process brings its own attributes to your beer, i personally find dry hopping a bit of a kafuffle and even though I have a tea ball and muslin and marbles its fiddly

If you want subtle, add during boil or at flame-out. If you want aroma/flavour dry-hop

Bingo! Best way imo. F that trying to weigh a hop bag down. The hops in the middle are bone dry. I like massive hop aroma though so my beers may not be to everyones taste.

Has anyone any experience with a hop rocket in their keggerator set-up or as a hop back on the brew day?

Put your recipe into BrewMate/BeerSmith/ProMash and start adding crystal to check beer color.
