Title: Liffey Belfast Comp
Post by: matthewdick23 on March 06, 2014, 04:22:58 PM
Evening folks, just want to announce the first interclub competition that ourselves and the Liffey Homebrewers will take part in. The competition will run as follows:

-Competition will be BJCP registered and run as any other BJCP competition
-Competition will take place in June on a date and location to be confirmed
-Entry is limited to 20 beers in total and entries will only be accepted by Belfast Homebrewers members only. So far no restrictions on entry numbers per person apply, but if we are oversubscribed, multiple entry brewers will be asked to remove an entry or two if needs be
-Entry fee will be approximately 1 £ per beer just to cover the cost of BJCP registration. There is no prize apart from bragging rights
-Judging will be performed by the Liffey Homebrewers club members (we will judge their entries) on the day so would be good to enter some stinkers and poison our southern pals
-Drop off to be confirmed as soon as possible
-We're hoping to have the judging done in Dublin and up here on the same day so the winners can be announced and showered in glory at the same time
-If its possible, we'll get an independent judge to judge the two winning beers to determine the ULTIMATE WINNER!!!

-Overall winner gets €20,000 to spend in the new homebrew store in dubln

Any questions feel free to ask

Hi all, I head up home every fortnight (to visit family) from Lucan and travel through Belfast - I can assist in the logistics of moving the competition beers South to North or/and vice versa if you wish....

Hi all,

This competition is still on, and I hear the Liffey lads are brewing away like beavers to get us a selection of beers to judge.

So let's get brewing so we can send them down the fruits of our brewing labour.

The plan is loosely as follows:
- We gather 20 or so entries from Belfast members. 20 individual entires would be preferable but if we fall short we may have to have more than 1 entry per member.
- We use my place as holding spot for the Belfast entries, so pm me to arrange collection. I live in Belfast so that's hopefully a good central spot.
- Cost of each entry is £1
- Closing date is June 22nd, hard stop as we're planning the swap over of the Dublin entries for June 23rd
- All beers (Belfast and Liffey) will be labelled with an individual number. This number will be cross-referenced with beer style on a separate sheet.
- On June the 23rd we give all the Belfast entries to a Liffey member who takes them away for judging.
- I'll take all the Liffey entries and keep them safe prior to judging.
- We arrange a June meet in which we judge the Liffey entries.
- We take a beer or two each and score (range TBD) loosely based on stated style.
- If there are 2 or more beers with the highest score we can pass samples around reach a consensus of overall winner.
- Once a winner is picked we then check another sheet which has the beer number and the name of the brewer.
- Brewer is announced and we send him/her a small trophy.
- The Liffey guys do the same for us.

Simple? Then get brewing (if you don't brew anything new then just enter something you're particularly pleased with).

Cheers,

-Barry

Sorry Barry, that was an off the cuff answer really. Ideally 1 bottle for logisitics, but when I gave it a bit of though I had a vision of 12+ people turning up to judge, in which case 1 bottle is norra lot.

What do you reckon?

Well we could do 2 bottles each though  there's the extra weight, bulk etc to consider.

An alternative, stated above, would be that the judges take a bottle each, drink no more than half, and give it a score. If 2 or more beers are tied for 1st place, there's a bit left of each for other judges to drink and compare and agree which is best. ATEOTD, it's a bit of crack, so not sure how technical we need to be.

But I'm happy with either approach.

Yeah 40 bottles would be a lot to carry to wherever the judging is taking place. Also the Hudson are happy for us to sample the odd homebrew but they might raise some eyebrows if we roll up with that many beers!

Good point, Chris. Plus, I've a little making up to do with them after the last meet:  a)demanding that my £4+ pint be filled up to the pint mark. b)tripping and clattering into their ornaments and being escorted out.

Maybe just keep it simple: 1 entry - 1 bottle.

Anyone know a good source of bottle crates around the Belfast area?

Title: Re: Liffey Belfast Comp

So far, at a rough count we have the following:

1: Barry (Bazza) - 2 entries
2: Chris (Sub82) - 2 entries

By my calculations that makes 4. I could send the figures over to Kings Hall and after 5 days of counting they'll confirm that it's something between 3 and 5.

Anyway, the point is, we're a long way off our desired total of 20. I can't believe there's no one else out there who's recently brewed something they quite like.

So, in the words of Delia Smith, 'Let's be 'avin' ya! Where are you?' *boke* 'I've done a wee bit of sick on me cardigan'

Numbers are looking a little healthier now: 8-10 and counting, but we still need more.

So, latest count is thus:

1: Bazza - 2 entries
2: Sub82 - 2 entries
3: mr.drankin - 3 entries
4: Roo -2 entries
5: Bill_00 - 1 entry

That makes 10. We'll need at least another 5 or 6. A total of 20 would be excellent, however.

Time's running out, folks; the 22nd is fast approaching. Get your name on the list.

If it helps, I can collect your entries. Just PM me and we'll arrange something.

Cheers,

-Barry

Come on Belfast brewers. These Liffey lads are making us look like a right stingy bunch  ::)

Kit, extract, ginger, bog, nettle, banana, parsnip.... doesn't matter just get it entered.

It can be 3 weeks or 3 years old, as long as it's drinkable.

Only 2 weeks left. Lets have one last big push here. Don't be shy.

PM me if you need it collected.

Bazza - what are the rules?

Do you have to be a full member?

Is it 1 x 500 ml, or 2 x 500 ml? The thread isn't clear.

p.s. called in at The Errigle last weekend. Thornbridge Black Swan (Black IPA) and Colorado Red on tap.

Nice one, Andy (BrewBilly)
I'm the Belfast collection guy so I'll get them from you and label them with numbers and the details, i.e. style and brewer will be held on 2 separate sheets, cross-referenced by the bottle number.

Hey Andy (Quiet_Man),

Rules-wise, apologies for the uncertainty, but I'm not sure if we ever completely decided if it was 1 or 2 bottles per entry. I'll double-check with Shane, but I'm leaning towards the one 500ml bottle (or 2 smaller) per entry rule. I think it makes most sense.

As for being a being a full member, I can't see that being a stipulation since it's meant to be a bit of crack as much as anything else, so if you've an entry or two then go ahead.

Good; we're well into double figures now  :)

Hey Andy,

Pickup is happening at lunchtime today.

We have 15 entries altogether. No less than 5 of these were submitted by Mr.drankin (loved the setup there, Dave. A proper 'lab' with loads of shinies and more shinies to come. I drove into that gate in a fit of jealous rage    :P  )

I've them all numbered and referenced by style and brewer on separate sheets.

The only difficult part was cleanly prizing open the lids off my fellow competitors'  beers to slip in a small dog turd  >:D

And Dave, the swig I had of your Simcoe Pale last Friday evening was well tasty. Thankfully I've a full bottle of it to tuck into this evening :)

Great effforts all round, lads! And huge thanks to the Liffey lads for their - ahem - hard work, if you can call drinking a pile of beers hard work  :P

Roll on Next Friday for the return leg!

Just so you know, I lack any kind of moral fibre and am open to all forms of bribery.  Highest bidder wins as far as I'm concerned,  and that's before a single bottle is opened.

Now that the air is suitably cleared you may begin the bidding.

Good stuff Barry. Hope you got that twenty I left in the box for you ;)
Just the one?

You're already struggling for an honourable mention at this stage.

Yep. It'll be a professional operation like the Eurovision. I've bought a dress and everything.

Even did a crash course on Twitter i.e. log in, type some banal shite, send out to the world.

Don't be. The feminist in me decided not to pigeonhole myself by wearing a dress so it's pleated trouser suit all the way.

Aye, shame you can't make it, man, but you wouldn't want to find out you've suddenly become a daddy while supping beers down the Hudson  :)
