I bought 3 bottles last week, and left the last 1/2 inch in each bottle to try crop some yeast, I added a 1 litre pack of Lidl's cloudy apple juice between the 3 bottles, and checked the gravity (1040) I left the bottles covered for a couple of days, no sign of activity, so I added some yeast nutrient to the bottles, 2 days later still no sign of activity, gravity @ 1039, decanted the 3 bottles into a conical on the stirplate, and 48 hrs later still no sign of life. Begininning to wonder if the exported bottles are pasteurised? Has anyone had any success growing on Old Rosie yeast here?

Was there a visible sediment in the bottom of the bottle?
Yes plenty of sediment , bought them in Drink on Manor st.

Last years GB juice took an age to ferment naturally ( like 6 weeks before any great activity ) Some peoples took off with the week others much slower.
Suggest you just pour it all into a demijohn, fit airlock, temp at about 18C and wait!

I'll bet that has been pasteurised. No big commercial maker would send out unpasteurised cider - too risky.
I'd be with you Will on this, especially as an export, whatever about buying it locally in the UK. I can see that in the UK some brewers have been successful in propagating yeast from the sediment. After a week and still no sign of life I reckon I'll use a store bought yeast. It appears from this write up it has been pasteurised.

We can out this one to bed, the Old Rosie bottles available here are export, and as such have been pasteuriesed, as Will suggested, the pasteuriser is the brewer's sedative, helps you sleep at night !

As can be seen from the numerous languages, it's obviously an export bottle. I dosed in some WLP775 English cider yeast and the starter took off like a rocket. Topped off to 4.5 litres with lidl apple juice and about 150 mls of honey. I'll syphon the cider off the yeast when it has flatlined, and pitch the yeast it into 25lts.
