Thinking of using some pearl barley in a brew (I'm out of flaked barley). Just wondering if anybody has tried it and if it was a reasonable substitute?
Too late. I made the call a around 2 and ended up with a stuck mash. Spent my afternoon coaxing wort out of my cooler when I should have been sipping on a few beers and watching the box :(
I wont make that mistake again.
What were you brewing with flaked barley? I have an open bag of flaked wheat that I use in weiss. Never used flaked barley.
Imark nothing ventured nothing gained! As you said there was to much problem associated with the pearl barley
I've only used flaked barley with my stouts for a better fuller mouthfeel
Shane - Cheers. I didn't realise I'd used all my flaked barley until the last minute so took a gamble on it.
From what I read on the internet pearl barley is torrified barley. So gummy mash aside, I think it should work as a flaked barley substitute in terms of end result.
