Brewed Pliny clone this morning. Og 1.076. Found a fly floating on the wort when removing the chiller. Removed the fly and some surrounding wort with a ladle. Pitched an active 1.3L started. Has anyone's brew ever survived one of these flys? Any chance the yeast will out compete the fly bacteria??? Someone say something positive!!!
Were you fly sparging? Sorry couldn't resist, the beauty of the boil is it sterilises the wort, there is not much that will live in boiling wort.
I say not the first time a fly took a bath in wort. Many a commercial brewery would have had that problem especially the open topped fermenter's of the Belgium brewers who would attest that it was essential to the taste. :)
I found a massive wasp in the bottom of my boiler last year after transferring into the FV. The beer fermented fine :) There's not much you can do about it now, I wouldn't worry about it.
Just badge it up as a Pliny Clone with extra "protein".
Thanks guys, hope your right. The fly was never boiled he was floating on the surface post chill. It'll be a savage brew if it survives. It was my first ever outdoor brew

Don't forget that when you bottle it to put an image of the fly on the label to honour his or her contribution. N.B. are there male and female fly's now that's a question to ask over a few pints :)
An observation of mine is that all species tend to go riding with an opinion that it is about to go out of fashion :)
Was dumping second batch of dryhops in this last night and used a ladle to remove a sample to taste....another fffffly.... dirty black thing! Im wondering did he arrive in the 1st batch of dry hops because Ive no idea how else he would have gotten in? Although I didnt have an airlock I did invert a glass tumbler over the airlock hole so dont suspect he could have gotten in that way. Not too worried at this stage as I'm hoping the high abv will keep bacteria at bay......
Anyone ever get a fly in their hops???
You're having no luck with this batch! How did it taste? You might want to throw in a few spiders to be safe :P

It's gets absurd, before you know he'll throw in a bird!!!
I made a turbo cider last summer. Had the airlock filled with vodka after a week the airlock was completely filled with fruit flies. None of them made it through the vodka though.

I can imagine that if I was heading somewhere and I found myself in a bath of vodka that I might hang around a little longer than originally planned :)
Wait and see this will turn out to be one of the best beers you ever brewed :)
