Title: Oud Bruin - 14 April
Post by: Dodge on April 14, 2014, 08:59:17 PM
After letting all the beer settle next to the barrel, today it was filled with epicness!

1st is barrel being emptied and rinsed out. The barrel smelt sweet with a hint of whiskey oak ness.

I also took samples of all entries and gravity readings. I'll post up after.

Now we still have 2 more entries but I think we will need one more to fill. I can do another batch next week since the barrel is here but if any one wanted to add that's fine.

Tomorrow all containers will be cleaned and sanitized.

Delivery will follow shortly courtesy of Dodge NHC Express

Eoin- would you like your yeast rinsed and bottled?

Just transferred the last in and we have an FG Check of 1.016. Bang on.

I did have a list of everyone's FG checked again prior to going in that I was going to post but I can't find it.

Update:

We are 2x 20L batches shy of a full barrel - anyone want to add or join up?

Thanks Garrett. I don't think its a necessity to have the barrel full to the brim but in my opinion it would be better.

if people want to up their contributions then fine otherwise we will just leave it as is.

Or infection, autolysis tends to be kinda like bovril or marmite.

I've 30 liters of plop.. I'll leave it and see if anything changes in six months.. I think it's drain bound

Throw it out to fuck, it won't improve from rubber....

That sucks. Did you leave it on the yeast since you brewed it?

Or as Eoin pointed out...you may have got an infection (which is even worse scenario since you'll have to dump the slurry).

No took it off the yeast at about three weeks.. It's in glass and I'm pedantic when it comes to sterilisation

Did you taste it? It may smell worse than it tastes.

No bad smell just tastes rubbery

I've tasted three different batches off that culture and nothing like rubber flavour. Apparently that is caused by butyric acid caused by a bacterial infection. Not something I've come across so just going by what I've read. Read up on it and see does any of it sound like what you've got.

My very first homebrew kit tasted rubbery going into secondary. went away over time. If thats any help.
I lifted the lid off a fermentor once and it smelled like a cow took a s!*t in it. That went away too.
Give it a chance.. :D

Ok lads, a year has passed and it's time to get this oud bruin out.

It ain't no Goudenband but I think it's still ok and can be worked further if you want.

I'll start a new thread on the actual date to empty but for now I just wanted to find out who contributed and how much as I can't remember. I think these were the actual entries, dodge, I mark, Eoin, tube, Dempsey, lordstilton, McGrath,

I've got a spreadsheet with planned contribution. I'll dig it out.
