Title: Using Whirlfloc with Steeping Grains and a Beer Kit
Post by: Garry on April 23, 2014, 09:40:13 AM
Has anyone tried this before? I stuck on a beer kit a couple of weeks ago. I added 1 whirlfloc tablet to the steeping grain juice and boiled it for 10-15min. There was a shít load of clumping in the FV for the first day or two but it all dropped to the bottom in no time. The beer is in the primary just over 2 weeks now. I took a gravity reading last night and was amazed at how clear the beer is. It's ready to go straight into the bottle  :)

I wonder would it pull out much of the goodness that you're putting in?
it would be a good idea for steeping grain + LME, then when boiling add your late hop boils at the same time.
The LME seems to have more break than DME (I suppose that's why HBC full extract kits come with a whirfloc tab)
bitterness will come from the kit, extra flavor and aroma from the boiled hops, dryhop later.

Dunno? I definitely overdosed it; using 1 full tablet in a 3 litre boil! But it seems to do the trick. I'll try bottle it this weekend and update in a few weeks.

The HBC kits come with whirlfloc regardless of whether you use LME, DME or use them in a full mash with a base malt.

I used 2 x 1kg tins of Finlandia traditional ale to 20L. The only other fermentables I added was a few grams of ale malt with the steeping grains, so the OG was low (1.034).

3 weeks in the bottle. There's a little bit of hop-haze but I did add a lot of hops to the hop tea. I'm very pleased with this one 😃
