Just asking cause it's 1.109 on the original recipe.

Methinks I have too much water (5 real gallons as opposed to 5 gallons US!)

Just need to re-tweek the water or up the malts by a couple of percent.

I will wait for "Nigel the Recipe" to upgrade it!!

Any blow-ins allowed?

As a side note - shouldn't pilsner malt be boiled for 90 minutes?

I have a very clean slurry WLP500 as well - looks perfect to me.
Could probably break it into 2 X  three litre starters without too much difficulty.

Bit of a bump.
Still haven't heard from some of our own NCB.
Lads, we need to know one way or another who is in so we can start thinking about numbers.

I suggest we open this up to others outside the NCB in a week or so if the places are not filled.
We have to think timeline. nearly into the 6th month which means less than 6 months till Christmas. I'd love to have a barrel ages Belgian for then. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

All that pilsner malt will require a 90 minute boil meaning a large boiler for a 25 litre batch (35 litre vesselminimum iI'dsay)

Why would you boil it for 90 mins?
Any other reason then getting higher OG?
Using pilsner regularly (up to 100% of a grain bill) and never had any issues, no DMS or anything unexpected.

Isn't it common to boil for 90 minutes when using pilsner malt to reduce dms?

Don't cover your pot & cool it fast to avoid it.

I'm torn, but I I'll have to bow out.  Wife due in a few weeks, so the timing is not great for making a commitment.
Any idea of when brew date needs to be and planned empty/fill date?

BTW, R@H gave me a taste of a carbed up version on what's in the cask and it's flippin' delish!

I don't think I need another big beer, but I'll contribute to make up volume if needed. I only have corny's for transport, so realistically 18L would be my limit. Let me know if need me..

No probs Hci.

Welcome to the gang. And very Welcome your 50 L

We can discuss our secret inaugoration rituals over a beer at our next meeting at the Boro. Thread will be going up soon

BTW: We make the Mason's and the Knights of C.'s Initiation ceremonies look like first day in kindergarten!

So an update:

1.  Will_D 25L
2.  Jacob 25L (50L if needed)
3.  Partridge
4.  Nigel (23L)
6.  BrianC
7.  Mr Extract via P9
8.  DamienM
9.  Cahalbrua
10. Mcgrath (18L)
11.  Hurleyci (50L)

So assuming the other non volume quoters are at say 18L, I think we have 230 litres or therabouts and thats without Jacobs top-up!

Now two more things:

Colmac has said he's out due to new arrivals so where can we do the transfer/store the new barrel?

@ColMac If you are ok hosting the new brew for another 6 months we would be v. thankfull!

If not then we will empty the barrel on a suitable day to you , ship it empty to another location and fill the next day.

One possible location is the Rugby club shed! Any other options?

Also point deux: Can someone pickup this ball and get the recipe/logistics/etc rolling?

I need to start thinkink of the club competition!

And also anyone fancy going point on the Boro brew day?

Title: Re: Belgian Quad

I think this could be a pretty good base beer we could tweak with out own ingredients and specs.

It's from a few years back. I did something similar and was very happy with it.

Read about it, but never had any issues with DMS.
Don't cover your pot & cool it fast to avoid it.

Just FYI, 80% of lagers in March had DMS. But, it's not a serious off flavour, even in lager. A couple of gulps and you wouldn't notice it any more.

Maybe not for Czech, but I think DMS is very common.in German lagers - Spaten comes to mind.

I also get a bit of a corn flavour off Westvleteren, more in an adjunct way than a DMS way.
