Post by: Rossa on May 03, 2014, 03:29:37 PM
Is you local club entering? If so, Start a list please. Depending on the number of clubs entering  we can finalise the the number of beers going through from each club.

What ?? One month notice ?? Unless you're talking about late June. Still would prefer July.

I think a date should be announced so that we can all organuse ourselves/our clubs and the finals. Saying early June is a bit too early (apologies to Bren who as always is quick of the mark)

Thats like 3 weeks to brew a beer and get it judged locally.

I suggest end of June: 21 st of June is the summer solstice! Longest daya and all that ideal for a "Summer Beer"

I know last year was silly late for a summer comp but Wicklow entries won't be ready till mid June :(

True  ;) I suppose it'll depend on the availability of venues to some extent anyway.

It was 3 last year. If we get only 6 clubs entering we could bump it to 4 per club maybe with a max of 2 per brewer/brewing group perhaps. If we hit 7 clubs we could just go for the 3.

Just back from the NCB May meeting and we all want to know when this is going to be finally judged.

We need a date so we can work backwards to the club judging and so forth backwards as to when is the best time to brew.

Some people have brewed already, some are about to start and some are a week or two away from even starting.

Please please can we have a date?

Farringtons are hosting us, although Barry was meant to get back to me. A 1pm start will have us finished in a few hours.

If the beers can arrive in Farringtons FAOnBarry Kavanagh/homebrew club or to me by 1pm on Sunday that would be great.

24 beers Max. 3 from the clubs below. If there are others from other clubs then they better shout.

The Rascals are down to judge with Rueben and I have another lined up.

There will be bjcp points for this comp so anyone who wants to help out please shout.

If you're stuck you can sneakily use the bus, pick a busy bus time, throw your bag of entries into the luggage compartment and then get someone in Dublin to pick them up.

You know of any heading from Galway by any chance?... I missed my chance with Eanna last weekend as I was away, and had ruled out Courier / Post because of the liquid/beer restrictions.

I'm not too pushed but if you know of anyone let me know I'll get a bottle to them tomorrow.

All welcome today from 12.30 to The Norseman. I was talking to Barry and Shane and they will have some nice freebies for us unless they drank them last night!

Judges are -
The Rascals
Reuben Gray
Andrew Moore

We are going to split the judges into two teams and do two final flights with a top group from each flight going into the finale.

Any BJCP folk who want to pick up points please pop in to help out.

So what were the beers?

Top 3 Beers:

1st Eanna Burke - Lemon Saison
2nd BarKar - Berliner Weisse with Raspberries
3rd. Bren Murphy - Passion Fruit Beer

Remainder of beers in Best of show (due to ties there were 8 in total)

GCB2 - Blond Ale (Honourable Mention: Judges described as a lovely beer they could drink all day)
John Craddock - Dark Mild (Honourable Mention: Judges described as a great beer)
Rossa - Mild
Beerfly - "Red" ale (Did very well in the qualifying stages)
Brenmurph - Beetroot lager

I would like to add that the standard of beers this year was exceptional and it has definitely become more competitive with higher average scores as people are better prepared for the competition. The colours and contrast in the best of show was very impressive.

Well done all. A fruity top three! Would love to try that Lemon Saison, will the Rascals brew that soon enough? Sounds like it fit the brief to a tee, a few low abv Lemon Saisons while the weather is warm would go down a treat!

Will we get feedback/score sheets?

+1 on the feedback.

As a sugestion for next year: Declare the ABV of the beer (maybe also OG/FG as a check) and factor it into the scoring.

As in WeightedScore = Score * (abv/4)

My beer was 2.5% or less and was probably fighting against a 3.6 or 3.7%

Ok this is what the comp states <4% but what do we all think.

Also next year I have been asked to make some low alcohol ciders. Could we factor in a cider into the comp?

@Eanna; Well done, We can't wait for the new breweery to open!

Think shiny is scanning the score sheets

Maybe having different bands might be better.  2-3% and 3-4% the judges should be able to factor it into their scoring if they are aware of it, weighted scores could get a bit messy.

Also since all the beers are judged together the style should be provided as this also helps the judges.
Can't see any problems with having ciders in, just they would have to be judged with all the other entrys, or a pair of judges could nominate themselves to do them.  not really practical to have seperate judges for them as there might only be one or two entries.

agree, with some process tweaking it could be different / better / more validated. WEe had beetroot 3.7%, passion fruit 3.4% and a 2% no name ale on bottle condition. If I was judging I would choose the first two over the latter, however knowing a brewer produced a great beer at 2% would be an acheivement that deserved some merit.

If anyone has brewed a 2 / 2.5% beer you would know how tough it is to get flavour from  half the volume of malt....hence the difficulty so perhaps a sub 2.5% section and a 2.5 to 4% section may help make it fair to those entering ultra low abv beers after all from a health viewpoint it may be a great publicilty to show that as homebrewers we are at least interested in low abv beers

BTW our 2% ale scored a cracking 37 I believe, despite abv not being publicised :) we are delighted with this achievement :)

I have the score sheets and will scan them all in at some stage this week. Will I see no problem with accommodating cider's into the competition, I know it says summer session beer competition but I don't think anyone would have disallowed a cider especially if it has come in the top 3 in your club.

I don't think so but it definitely wasn't excluded to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks everyone who was involved in organising. This is my favourite competition in the year.

I agree with the point above about declaring your abv. I don't think there's any need for a mathematical weighting of the scores but if some of the beers are almost double the abv of others, that's useful info for the judges to take into account.

I forgot to thank the judges and Shiny for their work yesterday, it was a lot of beers for very few judges, especially after the conference weekend some of them had. Thanks to everyone involved!

Crikey. Looks like I came last. Must check the other bottles because the kegged beer went down well.
AH well.
Fair play to all involved.

Hi there

First off thanks to judges and organisers for a job well done and congratulations to the winners. Unfortunately I could not attend due to prior family commitments. As I am not aufait with the running of the competition I would appreciate if somebody could answer my queries.

Have read through the score sheets and was wondering how the different beers were grouped and then judged to determine which beers went forward to best of show? On first glance my score was good but it's not entirely clear to me why it was not good enough.

Also is it possible for the judges to read their comments from my score sheets and confirm what they wrote for my beer as I found some of the writing illegible :)

Balls!!

Great feedback from the judges, but, it certainly wasn't supposed to have brett jumping around in there. It wasn't there in the initial round and until the end of the keg, so, it must have been from the bottles I put the last of the keg into. I think they where the bottles that had a bretty berliner in that I had to dump because of too much Ethyl Acetate rendering it undrinkable. Lesson learned, be more scrupulous with hygiene, particularly after brett, which in fairness I am, separate cold side equipment for sours, but, didn't consider the bottles!!

Bren, your Passion Fruit beer sounds amazing, great score with 49!

Agree - good feedback from the judges, much appreciated.  I thought it was interesting to see the preference was mostly for beers on the sour side, which I wouldn't have thought was necessary for a summer beer, but then I wasn't doing the tasting.
I had originally intended to submit a rhubarb weiss - I brewed a normal weiss then split it and added rhubarb to one part.  When I tasted it though, I thought it was too tart so went with the base beer instead, and the main criticism was that it was too sweet, so maybe I entered the wrong beer!  Think I might have another go at that recipe, might have it right for next year - maybe.

The beers were split between two pairs of judges where each pair judged approximately 10 beers. The top three beers from each pair were selected to go through to the best of show. A tie for 3rd meant that 4 beers went though from the group of beers in which yours was judged. The top scoring beers qualifying for best of show in that group got scores of 96, 92, 85, 85 so that should give you a good idea where you came which was very high by BJCP standards but the quality of beer in this competition was very high so the competition between beers was very tough!

So my 69 was pretty good.

Had a chuckle at one of the comments:

"A bit too much body " !! Not bad for 2.5% beer

So I understand that the other group had a lower scoring relevant to each other as judged by those judges in the other group. So even though I scored higher than others in the other group it was not enough to get me out of my group. No guarantees that if I was in the other group that I would have the same high score.

Thanks for the clarification.

Yeah the other groups score was on average lower but it was consistently lower. So if you were in the other group you would have got a lower score and placed similarly.
