On foot of Rossa's list here (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=6648.new;topicseen#new), I guess it's time we decided on a date, venue and format for the Capital Brewer first round judging session. For anyone who doesn't know about the comp, Rossa outlines the idea here (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=5862.0). The first round judging takes place at local club level and the winners go through to the national event in June.
Last time out we used Shiny's template (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=3948.msg48766#msg48766) for the first round judging session, which worked very well. It wasn't run as an official BJCP event last year but if anyone would like to do so this time around please go for it. I'm not a BJCP man myself but I'll help out in any way I can. Maybe Rossa could offer some advice on this front?
We normally meet on the last Tuesday of each month so I guess we could go with Tuesday 27th May. Tuesdays are a little awkward for me these days so I'd like to propose that we consider meeting on Wednesday 28th May instead, but of course I'll go with whatever the club wants.
The biggest decision to be made is the venue. Any suggestions? Last time we used WJ Kavanaghs but it was under different management then. Has anyone been in there recently? Would it be worth trying to reserve a few tables for the event?

It's just as good as before, imo. CARA is friendly with the owners but I'd assume they'd be accommodating enough anyway.
Yeah Kavanaghs worked well last time so definitely makes sense to have it there again.
Also don't forget!

we were talking about kavanaghs last week, i'll drop in during the week.
i dont mind it on the wed
Completely forgot about that other thread. My bad.
Are we gonna do a winter warmer comp?
Yup!
iv only been to one capitol brewers meeting which was yonks ago but just thought id mention the headline could be an option also, just saying
Only issue with the headline is it is a bit small, we had to drag 3 different sized tables together the last time and at that it was still very cramped. You could multiply that problem by a factor of two for a competition. Kavanagh's on the other hand, assuming it still has the same furniture, has loads of massive tables and plenty of room.
I'm putting down my name with a beer anyway.

Could everyone who plans to enter a beer or turn up on the night throw a quick eye over the competition guidelines in the first post here (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=3948.msg48766#msg48766) if you have a chance?
If you think any changes should be made let us all know. In particular, it would be good to know if everybody is happy to go with the same score sheet as last year. It prioritises taste and body over aroma and appearance, but also allows for a fair amount of marks to be awarded for how well the beer fits the competition theme (i.e. lawnmower summer beer).
Also, for those not entering beers, would you like to volunteer as a steward?

I'm happy enough with that anyway. For the club round though, are we not all judging each other? like when you say stewards - are they to give beer to designated judges or?
The stewards have to be there to pour the beer into pitchers so that the judges have no idea whose beer they are judging. Knowing who has brewed the beer skews the results.
My only suggestion is that the score sheet is half the size (half the number of beers) of the current one so that the scores can be totalled up throughout the judging rather than a load at the end.
Ahh I see now.
Wed 28th at 7pm in Kavanagh's ??

I think I'm the only person on the list not entering a beer and have no problem being a steward. Only problem is I've been reeled into playing tag rugby on Wednesdays so I'm not sure if i'll make this meet now. If I can make it, i'll do it.
I'm not entering and I'll most likely be there.. can do too!

will WJK's store beer for us in a fridge?
Am debating whether or not to go straight from work, get some food in (and leave the beer in their fridge for an hour or that) or head home first. Have nowhere in work to keep it cool so would be quite warm, even for an ale.
I'm in the same boat. I was planning to head in early for a bite to eat. I'll ring Kavanaghs to see what they can do for us. I'd be surprised if they didn't let us use the fridge.

did you get a chance to call them at all since? I can give them a bell for you if you're busy or that
I've tried a few times but no answer. I might be ringing the wrong number. I got it from this (http://www.jar.ie/pub/dublin/dublin-1/wj-kavanaghs) page - that might be the old Kavanagh's number though.
I just DM'd them on the twitting book+, not sure how often the check that, but if I hear anything will, I'll post it up. Might try call them later on too if I hear nothing.
Worst case scenario, they say no tomorrow and we're tasting warm beers on a sunny day! :'(
forgot about fridge space when i was booking it ::)
worst case could be getting a bucket of ice and sticking the beer in it, better then nothing
update on numbers as the list below is incomplete, i have 11 entries so we get about 10mins a beer and about 15/16 coming.

I nearly showed up last wednesday!! ???
edit: by the by, I don't suppose anyone has a spare stir bar I can buy off them??
Does anyone coming tomorrow have a sachet of Ale yeast, preferably US05 that they could bring along for me please?
I'll buy it off you!! needed for my next brew, an American Pale Ale, and I don't want to pay delivery cost from homebrew company for such a small item.
I'm bringing along some not so summery but rather delicious Porter, not so summery because it's about 5.6% :)
Don't mind stewarding too

I put in an order yesterday and it's en route today, only I won't be home til after tonight. Are you based in town at all (working or living)? I work on hatch street, I can bring a satchet of US05 with me on Friday & meet ya somewhere if your stuck? (Off tomorrow)
Other wise unless you can harvest someone's yeast from a bottle later, or buy a bottle of Foam & Fury, I think they used American ale yeast.
Hi Hingo
Thanks either one of the options sound good, but probably would prefer a sachet...I am based in town so could definitely meet you somewhere on Fri
Sure talk to you tonight at Kavanagh's... I'll hopefully be wearing a pink Capital T shirt!
The foam and fury idea is a really interesting one....

The homebrew shops will normally post it for you if it's just a sachet of yeast.
I'll bring a sachet in for you, I've a few at home, I'll look out for a pink Capital tshirt so...

Or get it from a bottle of Sierra Nevada which is where US-05 originated.
Oh right. I didn't think that was bottle conditioned, I only said OFAF as I got a couple of bottles yesterday and the bloke who served me put one of the bottles in upside down in a box with other bottles. got home to see yeast sediment at the bottom of one bottle and a cloudy other bottle.
Thanks Thomas...will look into that aswell...
Re using a bottle of Ale, do you just chuck it in at the last instead of your powdered yeast...? Intriguing....
Great night last night. And well done to Ronan for coming out on top. I absolutely loved Markc's Session IPA. Wonderful tropical aroma, every bit as pungent as a fresh bottle of Dead Pony Club.
Kavanagh's is still a great venue even if they didn't lay on the traditional free portion of chips ;)
Had a great time, nice you meet you guys and gals I hadn't met before.
Cheers Dr.J, yours was well deserved there in the top 3 though and i really enjoyed Ronans. It's a hard one to nail though isn't it? My favourite beer of the night was Michelles rather pleasant porter, lovely stuff. It certainly wasn't that pint of Thornbridge Puja Jasmine IPA, can can still taste it this morning! Should have stuck with a glass Rossa!
Mark
just in the door and looking for free chips ::)
it was a great night and it went pretty smoothly, i'll have the official results in a day or 2.
surprised the dark beers came out on top
Thanks a mill for bringing the yeast for me Mark! Will have a bottle of the American Pale ale for you in about 4 weeks!!
and for your comments on the porter :D
Definitely some great beers all round, great to see ye all too!
Good craic the other night! Loads of great beers

Thank's lads and ladies - that was a great night. Congratz to Ronan, but 386 was my favorite :P
Very smoothly run ladies abd gents. Well done. Fancy running the final?
Awesome. Must try this.... beer is bubbling away nicely after lovely day brewing on Sat. .. Thanks to Ronan for his help on the day 8)
I drunk Dead Pony Club today and I felt the same "eggs" :) so I was too harsh for Mark unfortunately :/
And the Results (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kGgZbfSb6iJSWdVBJRj_hDj_1Bn9tZGqdIfl6hE6om8/edit?usp=sharing) are in (finally)
I kept the offical results to club members scores only but also included the scores on the night
**drumroll**
1st Rossa - 186: Summer Stout
2nd BeerFly - 164: Light Red
3rd Markc - 175: Session IPA
Congratulations guys!!!
if anyone whats the scores with comments back let me know
Link isnt working for me. Id like my full results if possible
sorry noob mistake should be fixed now
Well done lads!
