here come the questions:
What gas are you using? Butane or Propane?
If Butane then what regulator are you using? For this size of burner I prefer the adjustable reg as opposed to the 37 mBar fixed reg.
The "silver bit" allows you to adjust the gas/air mix (like on a bunsen burner when you were in school)
The fact that you are getting a small blue flame meansd that you are not getting enough gas but the air mix is spot on!
Too much gas and not enough air gives a big yellow smokey flame!

I'm trying mine tomorrow. I just assumed it would work fine out of the box! Maybe I'll test it out first, before I mash in...
ok i took the lil gold piece off and there appeared to be something stuck in it, gave it a blow through and it cleared it out, flame seems to be fine now thank god, i was scared the cast bit had gotten clogged with dust or something. cheers for the help will_d but i am using a standard reg like the one pictured, why do u prefer adjustable? and im using butane

Reason I like the adjustable is that you can get a bigger/bluer flame ( means more heat and less soot ).
37 mBar is a fairly low pressure. Depending on ambient temp the presure in a butane tank is a bit higher than that!
More gas = more air (due to venturii effect) = more heat
SOMETHING FOR ME TO THINK ABOUT IN THE FUTURE I HAVENT HAD ANY PROBLEMS SO FAR WITH REGARDS TO HEAT (feckin caps sorry) but maybe when im doing bigger volumes it could be a big help
Would one of these be suitable Will http://www.gasproducts.ie/acatalog/High_Pressure_LPG_Butane_Gas_Regulators.html
I'm looking to get one of those square gas burners and don't want to end up needing to get a 2nd regulator.

Yes the one on the right is the one I use. It fits the standard Yellow Kosangas bottle.
The one on the left is for a UK(&NI) Calorgas bottle.
Excellent. Going to get this ordered at the end of the week. Hopefully be able to brew next week.
