Title: Anyone here using Iodine?
Post by: Eoin on May 06, 2014, 01:43:14 PM
I've been using Iodine for a few years now to test the conversion when I think of it.

I use it because it's standard in German brewing to do the "Jodtest" and I find it's just another level of reassurance that your mash has worked out.

Is anyone else using it?

I just use standard Iodine tincture for cuts etc bought in the Chemist, it's horrible cack to get on  your fingers and takes days to wear off.

Used it a few times for novelty never had a full conversion issue and especially now with herms but nice to be sure.
Desperate stuff and you look like you have been pulling security tags off clothes.

I used to use it but found that I was converting fine all the time so got out of the habit of not doing it. Must go and look for the bottle in see what BB decade is on it :)

I find it reassuring myself and once you have your processed nailed it becomes less important, a taste test is almost as good to work out if things have worked, but still it's interesting to see how the black disappears as the mash progresses.

I still use it now and again or if I mash either side of the time/temperure comfort zone

I presume when you use it for something like that Lambic that it's a total waste of time due to the cereal mash?

It's cheap in the chemists, small bottle, should last for ever, all you need is a drop at a time.

I used it a few tines when I had conversion issues. Don't bother anymore as I solved the problem
