Title: Become a Beer Judge in Belfast
Post by: matthewdick23 on May 16, 2014, 02:00:06 PM
Hey everyone

So in September I'm going to start a BJCP class in Belfast (http://www.bjcp.org/index.php).

We will end it with an exam for anyone who wants to become a certified beer judge.  Even if you don't want to become certified, it's one of the best ways to improve your homebrewing skills and knowledge of beer.

We will charge enough to cover beer samples of all the styles.

I'm thinking of one Saturday morning a month (something like 10-1) for 6 months or so.

What do people think?

Who is in?

Matt, I would be keen. Just need to confirm a house moving date - don't think I would be to popular if I left the missus to move house by herself

Any update on this?

We who did the exam in Dublin have at LAST got our results.

I for one will want to redo the exam sometime.

The even better news is that there are nor 2 UK National judges so no need to fly one in from the states.

Need to see if Dublin is thinking of holding a separate "exam only" job or are they going to do another course and exam. We need to keep together on this

So have done the numbers, and it looks like we can do one up here for around £88 pp.

That includes a sample of all beers (from the 2014 list). Those which aren't available, will be brewed for sampling! Also include the siebel off flavour kit (which we will do the first class, I think), crackers and craic.

It doesn't include any exam fees. I have emailed Ali and essentially, if we want to do another exam in Ireland then we need to fly examiners over (but this time its not necessary to get an American). There is an exam in England next year, but it is full.

What do people think? Are there people here interested in doing a class together and/or sitting an exam?

I have some non NHC'ers interested.

Yeah definitely up for this. When would it be held? My brother-in-law was hoping to attend but lives in Glasgow.

I would be interested in re-sitting the exam only, with ye :)

As I am sure a number of BJCP judges down here would be.

We need to get over 80% in the tasting exam to progress to the written exam ???

BTW: Do NOT under-estimate the online exam - its a bugger!!

Are you guys interested if we aren't able to schedule an exam immediately after the classes? Working on it atm, but not clear we'll be able to do one soon after the classes are finished.

Thanks

Yeah I'd still be up for it. Not really sure how it all works but if there was an exam later down the line would it be possible to do a quick recap?

Hey

So we are literally about to open the community share offer for boundary brewing in Belfast.

After we launch in March, we will start offering the classes.
