Have been doing some reading and I also had an Oddbins#2 which is brewed by Compass brewery in Oxford that was touted as the Summery BBQ drink of choice over in UK. It was smokey but not too much.
Just wondered what your experiences have been, if any?
Yes, Aecht Schlenkerla clone and a few gratzers. Gratzer really is the ultimate summer bbq beer. The first was 97% rauchmalt and carafa but could have used a small bit of munich. Fermented with WLP german bock yeast and fairly low IBUs. Gratzer is maybe OG 1030 with 40 IBUs of saaz 100% weyermanns oak smoked wheat malt and S-33 dry yeast
Did this one and really enjoyed it

I havent brewed a proper German rauchbier but sometimes substitute 15% of the base malt of a porter with rauchmalt to get a slightly smokey porter .
I hacked the hbc all grain kit for their rauchbier by adding a further 2kg of rauchmalt. It was smokey but not as smokey as i like it. Good beer and it got me silver in the specialty beer cat in the nationals.
