Title: Black IPA

want to brew a black IPA and hack a kit, i have these two kits.

which kit would be best and any tips and ideas on what to do.

Not really familiar with either kit, but not sure it matters that much if you are going to hack it black ipa style. Hacked a kit with the buddy before, and just steeped a good bit of dark malt and then steeped plenty of hops and dry hopped it, so you won't taste much of the base kit anyway. It was a good while ago, so didn't take any notes, but it turned out well, so good luck with it.

so my IPA today went with 500g crystal 113ebc (nice and dark  ;)) and 10g centennial at 15 and 5 mins and 15g amarillo at 15 and 5 minutes and 1kg of amber spraymalt, the can of IPA and US-05  :). Looks quite dark in the fermenter and pitched the yeast at 20c.  ;D

made the black IPA today, with help from Robrew.

John Bull IPA kit
1.5kg can of LME
180g of enhancer
100g wheat spraymalt
250g Maris Otter
300g Whole wheat grain
250g Carafa III - steeped for 2 days in 2.5lts of water
30g Cascade
25g Magnum
20g Amarilla
US 05 yeast
22lt brew

OG was 1048

both of them i did at 65* for 30 mins then boiled when i removed the grain.

so it was a mash without rinsing the grains I suppose?

Hi John, if you're going to that trouble you might as well get a bag and brew BIAB. You're doing a mash anyway. If ur pot is smaller than normal u can do maxi BIAB. I brew BIAB in a 40litre boiler. Eoin Mags wife does excellent custom bags
