Anyone know of examples of these two styles that can be found for sale in Ireland?
No Berliner here but there is a few of us in the club brewing it.
There's a Swedish beer called Mariestadts which is available in some off-licenses which would be a reasonable example of a export lager. Tesco used to have it but I'm not sure if they still do.
There's only one authentic Berliner Weisse. It's called Kindl Weiss and I've never seen it here. I'm planning on making one pretty soon. It's a bit like gose and Brown Paper Bag have a gose out at the moment. However gose is stronger and has salt added.
rightio, cheers lads :)
Just gotta get brewing☺ it can take 4-12 months for the Berliner to come round
Has anyone ever tried brewing the no boil (http://www.themadfermentationist.com/2008/02/berliner-weiss.html) Berliner Weiss on the mad fermentationist?
That's pretty much what I'm thinking of doing. It's basically Kristen England's method - it's not as crazy as it sounds as it get rest at 70+ so it should be pasteurised. It also looks like a very quick brewday. :)
Based on brewing gose I don't think it should take a BW a long time to sour, but that's depends on what you pitch at the outset.
No better man :P
A 2 day sour mash will knock months off brewing a Berliner. Its on my to brew list but going to have to wait a few weeks till herself is away for a few days because everything I've found says its a bit of a whiffy brew day.

Have a look in the spreadsheet, there was a BW in the March competition. Scored 23.
There was. No sourness in it all.
There is a cheat to this style , I have brewed it this way , throw in 200g of acid malt and a hand full of grain after the runnings let PH drop to 3.8-4 over 3 days or so keeping temp steady circa 36c for souring, ferment - finish low
I threw in Raspberries, lots and lots
Don't know whether its representative of style hard to get commercial example , Aldi used to do fruit flavoured schoffer hoffer years ago which was probably the closest I every seen here

Berliner Weisse is served with either a Himbeer (raspberry) syup or a thing called Waldmeister syrup, this is apparently woodruff, to be honest it's very synthetic and the Germans just laugh when you ask them what it is, it's green and tastes kinda herbal, nasty shit in my opinion.
In summary, it's a 2.5-3.5% beer that's sour and has syrup added to make it palatable... :)
Not my bag at all.
I didn't. I did taste it though. Also had it last week. Lovely now 🎩
I used the technique described later in this thread

for a gose last year. Planning to do a BW as well this summer. Very simple - pitch large (say 3 litre) lactobacillus starter grown up as close to body temp as possible and neutral ale yeast at the start of the ferment.
Gose was sour straight away also tasted of baked beans ??? for a while. Is now intensely sour, but also very clean which is what I find intriguing about these styles. They're sour, but they are still very German.
FWW BW is nice cut with M&S Normandy Apple Juice.
Just picked up a bottle of Karmeliten Kloster Gold in my local garage and according to the internet it's a Dortmunder Export. Light, easy drinking, nothing amazing but good for this type of weather. The garage is generally supplied by Musgraves so if you check out your nearest Super Valoo they will probably stock it.
thanks doc <3
