Title: Moving server
Post by: admin on June 08, 2014, 09:56:27 PM
Evening all. Justa quick FYI to let ye know I'm absconding from running the website to focus on building my RIMS system. As hosting is provided by a buddy of mine, James Keane is going to move the site. Bit like borrowing your mate's car, you don't feel happy unless you're driving it yourself. Aim is to have it moved by July 12 when I come back from holidays. I'm sure James will keep you informed of developments!

Update -

So basically now we have backed up the SMF / Wordpress / competition db's and the web pages (inc the wiki)
I dont see the migration of wiki / wordpress  or competition being too much of a problem

but SMF looks like a bitch to DR backup and restore - I'll let you know how I get on.

Going to attempt to get it working in some shape or form on '1and1' - thats PHP4.4 - we are on 4.3, so we are pretty close.

If that goes to plan - black knight shared hosting (MIDI) looks good (including 4.4), note - a lot of SP want you on 5.X.
I am actually on holidays myself from the 27th June in a camp site with little or no wifi. So my deadline is around June 20th  - Thats my timelines.

The real joke is that SMF themselves say not to use their backup facility - so why put it there then !!

It would definitely be easier just to run the VM somewhere else - but there is a shed load of upsides to going to a shared service (IMO)- it pushes a lot onto the service provider and pressure away from our IT side.

So the long and the short -

having the backups offline (that I now have) I can do the rest without disturbance to the live service.

It could work - it may not .. I'll let you know.

Lads -

Just an update-  I got SMF 2.0.7 installed, database setup (to the same levels) all looking good on my test site.

Next job - restore all the backup existing data and see if it functions correctly.

Fingers crossed !

I'll let you know how I get on.

Right - that sort of worked ..

In that the forum is working now on a shared service.

There is a lot of fine tuning to be done
The themes go a but mental
The Avatars disappear (I presume a path needs updating)
The email needs to be changed / updated to our new SMTP service

etc

But - its usable .. not sure about tapatalk and the other mods yet..

Gents / Ladies

Just a quick update - all going well, some more testing to do but hosting with black knight is setup. Just in the process of moving the data and creating all the databases.
There is a little bit of messing with the database connections but nothing crazy, still confident of getting it all done by friday 27th.

Probably looking to move the domain on wednesday / thurday next week - would like to move
the DNS record onto the account at black knight as its owned by the club and paid by our club paypal.

Guys -

I am going to post the daily progress on this here so people are in the loop

Today we added a redirect to the old apache server to point forum requests to the new hosting area.

We also learned that migrating wordpress is not a simple as first envisaged!

The email has been setup on the new site (so you get email notifications)
