Title: new to brewing, looking for advice
Post by: Shane mcdonagh on June 16, 2014, 04:03:07 PM
Hey guys! New to brewing, been to a few brewdays in T.O.G. and have had allot of help from the members of NHC(big thanks to all the guys). Recently I bought a mashtun, kettle and heat exchanger! going to brew for the first time on my own tomorrow!  :)

thinking of using this recipe! just wondering if it sounds good, or anything that you'd change!

4kg Marris Otter
.45kg crystal malt (150 ebc)

hops in boil
60 min 20g challenger leaf
15 min 25g citra pellet
2 min 20g Amarillo

1 WLP001 california ale yeast

Beersmith says 52.1 ibu and 5.46%

Is 15 left in the boil too long for Citra? Will most of the flavours be boiled off?

I have centennial,warrior,zeus too

and I have some out of date hops (plan on using 25% more if I use them) cascade, galaxy, magnum challenger(the challenger i have above is fresh)

any comments/advice would be great! :)

How out of date are the hops? Were they stored in an airtight container/in the freezer?

Recipe looks good otherwise.  :)

Out of dates hops are vacuum packed, were store at about 16 degrees! Out of date since January or so! Any way of testing them? French press coffee maker any good?

Are they still green?

Haven't opened them yet!

Also, after 2 weeks of fermentation I was considering racking into 2 separate fermentators and dry hopping one! 2 weeks too late? Would I have to repitch the yeast?

2 weeks would be about right to let fermentation complete - you definitely won't need to repitch.
