Just realised I forgot to order yeast , is there available?
Am growing some up for my brew. I have promissed Ciaran(mcgrath a few cells in a vial for growing up. Can give you some as well if you want. You will have to step up about 3 starters at least.
maybe quicker to buy (they should ship a vial for just the real postage cost - maybe?)
Probably quicker though to order a few other "essentails" and pay the courier delivery charge!
Thanks for your quick reply Will. I will get some online.

@McGrath: I have the yeast for you
Got yeast today but they have sent me the wrong one.
I ordered from homebrew company WLP530 Abbey Ale Yeast.
The sent me WLP545 Belgian Strong Ale Yeast.
I have checked their web site and they are now showing they are sold out of WLP500 and WLP530.
Is it alright to brew with the WLP545 or should I get WLP530 from another site.
Thanks Brian.
You'll be fine. We probably wont even taste any difference when we'll mix your batch with rest.
Also, you may check with Will if he have any slurry left, or wait few day and I'll give you some.
Probably will transfer mine to secondary around Wednesday.

@Brian: Some extraction that! I also hit about 1.150 in 20 litres at end of kettle draining. Diluted down a bit as above. Fermentation took off like an express train (oxygenated for the first time)
I'll well behind on this. I'll hopefully get to brew early next week.
When are we hopping to empty and refill ? Have me a
Date set yet?
First we need to have nearly enough brews ready to fill it.
So as not to inconvienence ColMac too much we should aim to empty and fill in one visit.
So far we are still quite short.
Can discuss more on Tuesday.
BTW: New baby NC Brewers - have you done you first brew on your dad's back yet?
I have my mash on now. Will post volume and gravity later when I'm done.
I pushed it today to get the numbers up a bit.
Bit of extra grain and lme into larger fermenters. Sure if wont go to waste.

Has anyone got some 500 they can bring along tonight? My starter is doing nothing. No sign of activity. Pitchable amount would be great.
Hmmm, was going to transfer mine to secondary on Thursday but might do it today then.
How much you need?
Scrap that last post. The yeast was a few months old and took much longer than expected to get going it's it's all good now. Very healthy when I just checked in on it.
Thanks anyway.
Glad to hear that fermentation started!

If we have a lot over I suggest we scale down the additions (say just 18 from everyone) , keep some mixed for topups and tasting and we can then bottle the rest of our own beer for ourselves. That way we should have a reasonable triple to enter in next years competioin.
As there are a number of casks around the country I will suggest to the national comp organisers a class for all cask aged collective or individual brews!
Apologies all, :-[ :-[
I have been away for a few weeks and am 2 weeks from getting this brewed, so I will step back from the first fill. I still intend to brew the Quad so when I have it secondaryed I will offer it as a topper upper if required.
Again apologies
hey no probs Damien,
I think a couple of weeks will still be ok for the initial fill, but also we always need a "toppyer-upper" (see: a Welshman can invent new Irish words)
BTW: I have the CM and the Candy if you need it!
Numbers are getting there.
Rules same as the last times.
Barrel should be emptied and filled in one day as quick as possible.
Hopefully there will be no shortage of pumps this time but if there is can we try get bru's one again. Hopefully we will have out own by then.
If there is any doubt about any of the brews they do not go into the barrel.

Great, I feel better now.
I plugged in the recipe on page 1 into Beersmith.
I'm getting an OG of 1.100
and only 6.1 IBUs not 20. (Edit.. Forget that, wrong equipment profile in BS. Fixed now..):)
Should I reduce the grain bill size to get the lower gravity? 6kg is a struggle, I'd appreciate the breathing space.. I think a lot of you got a high OG and had to dilute down?
Cheers..
The only issue is that the efficiency drops to 60-65 when the grain bill is big like this.
Just racked to secondary. Gravity down to 1.018
Tastes really nice but still a few points to go.

Just wondering what gravity you stopped sparge at?cheers..
Well I got SG1090 - about 22/23 litres then added a 2 litre starter so get about 25 in the fermentor.

I got 25litres in fermenter at 1.093
Great numbers !
Mine was 1040 after two weeks - still bubbling away !! Never seen an active fermentation this long.
Yeah it went well. That's why I posted about sparge gravity. I thought it would never come down. I usually stop sparge at 1.010(gravity leaving mashtun). Stopped a bit higher today. Glad it's done now..
Frank Extract finished his brew
he has 23 litres @ 1086 - big yeast starter of WLP500 pitched.
Lads - Checked @ 1020 - had a taste - do I really have to give it up for adoption ??
It taste like a real good double - or dubble or whatever you call it
Not too familiar with the quads meself.

These have the ingredients and have committed to brew:
10. Mcgrath (18L)
11. Barney(25L)
12. Hurleyci (50L) - unknown
Mines at 1.048. It seemed to take a break but is back by bubbling away again nicely. Tastes nice too..
An update on the gravities:
Brewed:
1. Jacob 25L Brewed (31-07-14 @ 1032)
2. Partridge20L Brewed OG 1.090 (19-07-2014 @ 1030 )
3. Cahalbrua 20L Brewed
4. Pat the Buttercup 20L Brewed
5. Will_D 23L Brewed on 03/07 OG: 1.094 (31-07-14 @ 1018)
6. BrianC 20L Brewed 05/07 OG 1.12 (WLP545) [After 10 days down to 1.020]
7. Nigel 28L ish Brewed 7/7 OG 1.090 ( Down to 1.018)
8. Frank Extract 23L 1.086
9. DamienM 20 + 20L 1.087
10. Mcgrath 18L (down to 1.048)
So the above adds up to about 237 L or so but as Damien is splitting its real 217 or so
Given the high gravities of some of the beers when we mix the barrel it may be ok to top up with PBW ???

I'm most likely away for the weekend, but just to second bigvalen there. Would love to get involved in a cask brew, especially now that I'll have kegs

ColmR needs to have his Barley wine collected. Is anyone collecting his? Everyone else is accounted for. It's hard to tell from the list but I count about 7 coming tomorrow. Is that right?
I am bringing a spare cornie or two just in case like!
So I can collect ColmRs
You could bring a full one and we could empty it for you ;)
Hi all. I plan to get there tomorrow with my empty keg. Sorry for the late notice. I'll have to leave straight away so won't be any use for giving lifts I'm afraid...
Hey lads might be running a bit late today will be there tho
Yea I'm still in the hospital feel free to empty without me shouldn't be far too long
Take lots of pics lads. Raging I can't make it.
So what's the feedback? Cathal said there might be a problem with it.
Reviving this thread after the taste we had in the 44 the other night.
What do people think about the brew?
Plans for emptying and possie refill?
The keg has a nice dose of Brett in it now so any other beers we add will come out funky.
How do people feel about a sour next? Proper dose of bugs and let it do its thing.
I have a sour on the go that I could transfer off the bug cake if we want some nice funky sour bugs.
+1 for a sour
A sour would be great
+1
+1 on a sour
To be sure to be sure:
We all just brew the base beers. So there is no risk to our breweys.
The souring is added to the cask. Later much later we we take out the sour base beer and do what we want with it (like Cherries and Rasberys)
