Title: Kit similar to Smithwicks
Post by: TheCavanMan on August 02, 2014, 08:08:38 PM
Guys

Can anyone recommend a kit which would taste similar to Smithwicks. My son's mate will only drink that stuff.

Thanks

you could try the coopers red ale with some roast barley, EKG 45-60 min boil, S04.
sounds like a good starting place

What's a good starting point for each, barley and EKG.

Haven't used either yet.

I'd probably go with :
150g crystel/caparils (for body and head)
50g roasted barley 300(for colour a and a little roastiness)
30g EKG @ 60min
15EKG @ 10min

Smithwicks is very light bodied. I'd only use 500g of DME and 500g of dextrose with the kit. LordEoins grain additions sound good. Smithwicks only has about 20-25 IBUs, so I probably wouldn't add any hops myself. Smithwicks don't  :P

as far as i know they use ekg, but just for bittering.
You could leave the hops out entirely for a plain glass of fizzy red piss (which is what you're after anyway) and rely on the IBUs from the kit.
It'd probably be easier anyway if you've not done any kit hacks yet
