Title: lager yeast
Post by: LordEoin on August 04, 2014, 12:07:03 PM
about to put on a lager.
I was going to use 34/70 but i only have 1 pack (11.5g says sufficient for 10-15 liters)
I also have 1 pack of young's lager yeast (5g says sufficient for 23liters)
Which will make the better lager?

You could use both which by the sounds of it would give you the right kind of pitch size.

You might get a nice house strain going.

I suppose I could just pitch both, but seeing as the young's is sufficient for the full batch would I get some unwanted flavors from overpitching?
it's kinda stupid to provide half a bath worth in the 34/70 pack.. ::)

Grow a starter with the 34/70.

pitching time will be in a few hours. no time for a starter.

I'm not big on lager making but wouldn't you need a big starter anyway so over pitching could be hard with dry yeast...

I used 1 packet once and it took 36 hours to kick in. Brewed at 12 c.
It came 3rd overall in the Nationals so ::)
