I'd be interested. Last year's turned out great.
Did you try blending it Shane? Works great with a wheat beer 1/2&1/2. You can thank WiilD for that one.
I'd be interested!!!!

How much does this work out per liter lads?
Yeah I was wondering where did you source last years, and how much did it work out at? Did the orchard/supplier have a minimum amount they'd sell?
I'll ask the organiser
I'd be very interested as well.
Just the one for me this year, space is becoming an issue.

TBH, these are the lads I had in mind from the get go... I LOVE the bottled apple juice and cider vinegar they make and the apples themselves are awesome too. They offer a cider specific blend here http://www.llewellynsorchard.ie/Premium_quality_from_Irish_Orchards/Irish_Cider/Cider_apple_Juice-recordid-105-z-product_details.htm (http://www.llewellynsorchard.ie/Premium_quality_from_Irish_Orchards/Irish_Cider/Cider_apple_Juice-recordid-105-z-product_details.htm)
Any resident cider boffins care to weigh in??
David's too expensive although there might be a considerable discount for the amount we're getting. Was in Conns juice we got last year?
I figured it'd be premium prices alright! No harm in getting a quote though ;)

Welcome to the NHC newbee :)
Last year it was €28 (I think) for 25L and you got to keep the 25L drum that it came in. I'd guess it would be a similar price this year?
One thing though, you have to be a full member to take part in the group buys. Details on how to join here (http://nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,2541.0.html) ;)
Thanks garry - beat me to it
Last year was a euro per litre from Conn Tra's
Thanks Garry I didn't know I'll look into joining shortly
Sorry Garry didn't see your post there! Cheers

I have a 7 seater. Not sure it would fit all that though. I'd guess not.
I'd assume a few of us would drive down...

Silly question time, but I assume with this, it's a case of it's picked up on the day, then same day members coordinate to pickup from their local club and brew within the next 24/48 hours?
Never done a cider before - quite excited to give this a go now! About the only thing I know is I don't want it to be cloyingly sweet.
We just cracked our first of last yrs bottles. Reasonably dry cider lots of fruity aroma and flavour is very good. This was a batch let go on its own wild yeasts and worked out well.

A couple of points to consider:
The fresh AJ is good for more than a few days. It does not have to be processed in 24 hours or less.
If you just leave it as it is and replace the screwcap with an air-lock it will self ferment using natural yeasts
About half of the last GB was fermented like this.
Option 2 is to use campbden tablets (amount depends on the pH) to suppress the wild yeasts and pitch a yeast of choice.

I can drive a van if I'm available that day. I have rented a decent size van from that place valuevanrentals before out by the airport, very easy. As mentioned before keep in mind extra costs for diesel and also insurance, which I think was about €60.
I don't have a van but i have a full clean licence and over 25 years without an acccident so if ye need a driver or assistant let me know,i would be willing to store some apple juice for any southerners in my gaff, to be distributed via me and them at later stage ? ;D
Now since i didn't read all 6 pages can anyone tell me what price is this apple juice coming in at and what size drums ? Is there any chance this supplier has Pear juice too ? Try as i might i cannot get fresh pear juice anywhere to make up a full batch of pear cider or wine, not even in UK :o

Good question!
Haven't the last couple of batches come from Conn Traas in Tipperary?

Has anyone approached theapplefarm.com or any other orchard already?
I am dropping down to 50. Reasson being is that I am not sure that this is going to happen. I will source juice from elsewhere. Then I don't want to suddenly be hit with 100 from this buy if it ever happens.
Has anyone even talked to Con Traas at the Apple farm ?

I'd reiterate what Will said - if it is going to happen a group of people ,or someone, from the list needs to get things moving just like any other group buy.
It's now the time of plenty and apples are 10 a penny, so I'm going to put my effort towards fresh apples instead of juice.

I've sent a tweet to Conn Traas, to see if he even has any juice available, but as I am not looking for juice, I won't be taking it any further after that. Personally, I don't think this group buy is going to happen, as no-one seems to want to co-ordinate it, which is understandable considering the amounts involved, but hopefully I am prooved wrong. Buying the juice is probably the easy part, as distribution to a tight schedule will be the real challenge. It might be more feasible to break it down by club, and do it that way with one or two members co-coordinating for each club. If people are just hoping to put there names down on a list, pay their money, and get juice delivered to them, then it's not going to work.
Like I said, I don't think this is going to happen, but you never know.
I agree Billy.
Yeah I've done my group buy organising for the year, so was blindly hoping someone else could carry me along for once :)

Anybody have a van that could be used to collect & distribute it? I would not know Conn Traas & I was under the belief that previous group buys of juice were done as a favour rather than something he was actively interested in. Where is he based? Is it feasible that somebody close to him collects & stores the juice. Would be interested in a road trip but my car is not huge.
Shanna
Conn is based in Tipperary. From talking to someone in the know, I think Conn is agreeable enough, and should be able to facilitate the purchase. I still think you need to break it down by club, or location, as current ask of approx 1100 litres breaks down to approx 44 drums, so not feasible for one car, and even stretching the limits of a lot of vans. I think you need 3 or 4 fella's to land at Cons on the day, and then distribute onwards, as you don't want the juice sitting around too long, as it might start to ferment.

So dividing up the latest list we have 1250 litres in total (50 * 25 litres drums). I agree with Tafs remark that this will need to be handled by clubs. I suspect that the larger orders will also need to adjusted down to a more manageable amount. There is a large amount of people who have not marked down a club affiliation I have put them in unassigned. These people would need to add themselves to a club. I would also expect that each club needs to organise its own collection and distribution or where the orders are small and the clubs close by they could double up. I have put myself down for now for the South Dublin brewers. I would also expect that each club would divide up any transportation charges among themselves to cover the cost of tolls and fuel to transport the juice back.
Taf is there any chance the collection could be on a Saturday or is it the case that you get notified that he is pressing the juice on any given day and you need to come and collect it?

When talking about distribution it would make sense to have limited number of drop points.
Ideally one per club involved in group buy, for that moment that would be ~4.
No sense of driving around the country when you can visit just few people and they could
distribute AJ to local members.
Makes sense if you have a way to transport large quantities. Your own club is down for 13 containers of juice, that won't fit in to a car. Your going to need a van or a trailer.

Correct. My post (deleted now) was based on assumption that we'll organize bigger van/truck, collect all orders and then distribute it to local clubs.
Getting all sorted individually should work as well.

Your not going to be able to get to Cork, Galway and all the Dublin clubs in one day. You could warehouse the other clubs stuff but I suspect that won't work due to the short window the juice stays good. You also have to have a truck license and allow for the time for collection & return of the truck. I could justify 5-6 hours to do a run down to Tipperary & back. I don't have a truck license so am no use here. Not trying to be negative but I suspect if we don't organise something definite soon we will miss the boat.

Truck license starts from cat. and that's for vehicles from 3,500kg to 7,500kg.

Will someone volunteer to do this amount of driving given Ciderhead is not running it this time around. Not sure if he rented or borrowed the van. I seem to remember that he had some local clubs collect along the way. Whatever way this goes I think we need to get something definite worked out soon. If we can get juice confirmed on a definite date your half way there. if I remember last year's date changed at the last minute meaning hiring a van will be tricky.

Another possible option is to organise a group price with a supplier and let each person pickup from said supplier. No sure if that's a runner; just a thought.
A few observations:
1. Con Traas is not doing favours for us. Its a straight updeal. We contract for so many litres. We pay in advance and then he tells us when it will be ready. We turn up and collect. That brings me on to point 2
2. Distribution: In the last 2 GB's a hardworking/hard driving person picked up the the whole load and distributed around the country. This won't happen again (if I read the threads). So:
3. We can split the delivery up into the major regions: Dublin/Cork/Galway/whoever else. The local groups co-ordinate a pickup using a small van/pickup truck and then distribute at group level. Finally there is the group distribution to the individuals.
Or:
3. Each regional group goes down to Con to pick up a car load ! and then splits to the individuals.
I see I'm the only rebel on the list. :-[
If this is happening and Conn Traas is the supplier I should be able pick up myself on a Friday or Saturday. I'll live with the consequences if it's available earlier in the week.

Hi Will
I am starting to think each club/regional group going to Conn is the way to go. if it's a commercial deal then getting some kind of prior agreement on the collection date would not be unreasonable I would assume? If we collected the cost of the Apple juice in one go we could pay in advance as you suggested. Each club/group would have to agrre/collect any additional money's to cover fuel/tolls for whoever collects the juice.

Garden County Brewers as part of our own 400L juice group buy will ensure that this GB goes ahead in 2014.
This GB is now locked at 1075L to those above that have expressed an interest and the details on timing will be further discussed in members area, which means you need to be a member to take part.
So far its looking like;
The Van Hire is €170 including insurance, the Diesel and Tolls are €130, the surcharge therefore per 25L drum is €5 so that works out at €30 per drum.
The NHC Admin/Bank Charges is €1 per drum and the magic number is 6
This makes the total for each drum €31.06.
Don't pay any money just yet, but please keep an eye on the forum as this one will move fast and be completed before the end of the month.
The drop points we can facilitate are in Bold as follows: we need one person from each group to act as a drop point.

I'm collecting myself and I'm going to up my order to 50litres. I'll update again if any other Rebels are interested, but nothing so far.
List updated.
Unfortunate if the Galways guys are out, if we can get a few more drums in Cork, we can make the delivery on the morning, come on the Rebels!
There is also now 50L of juice available for anyone else that wants to get involved or bump their current requirement.
The formulation of this years Juice will be a blend of 2 well known specific cider apples, Dabinett and Mitchelin. For balance there will also be some Karmijn de Sonnaville, and Bramley.
They will be pressed the afternoon before and chilled in a coldroom, then delivered to your door within 12 hours, which is critical with fresh juice.
Could a mod please move this thread now to the Group Buy in the Members area thanks.
wow I thought this had bit the dust!!
I'm in but gonna revise down to 1 drum seeing as the priice has increased and im only dipping my toe into the cider making.. so...

Agreed. Glad to see that I am probably going to be proved wrong with some of my reservations re feasability of this GB.
