Title: Rice Hulls
Post by: Ash on August 29, 2014, 11:51:48 AM
Hey,

Anyone have any rice or oat hulls lying around that I could buy or swap? I'm making a pumpkin beer on Sunday and I hear pumpkins are a little bastard in the mash tun!

Also had trouble finding these in Ireland. I was looking to get some as Gordon Strong recommends throwing some in to help keep the mash temp more consistent throughout.

You could probably put the pumpkin in a muslin bag if you're stuck.

Where are you based? I'm down south and I've spare oat hulls.

@Mr Hoppy. I'm near Tallaght. Are you south Dublin or south country?

Ended up just mashing the pumpkin with a fork and putting it in a muslin bag before adding to the mash. Gave the muslin a few squeezes against the side of the mash tun from time to time to release anything that was trapped in there. Seems to have worked out well. The first runnings had a nice taste of pumpkin but my cooled wort didn't have so much. I added some spice at the end of the boil. She's chugging away nicely with a nice mulled smell coming from the airlock.
