Title: Meath Homebrew Club
Post by: IrishBeerSnob on August 29, 2014, 03:30:01 PM
I didn't know where would be the best place to put this.

I came across a few brewers at the Central in Navans recent Craft Beer fest and didn't know where else to put this, how would one go about setting up a club in Navan?

Yeah its what I was thinking of doing, gave the two lads my details and they got in touch, suppose start with a few and build from there.

Yes thats the way to do it.

When you have about 3 or 4 ask the mods to set you up a regional thread (if thats what you want). Then other people will see you.

Also scan the introductions thread and try to nab the new "Meathers" before us North County boys do!

i'll call into a few of the meets  when there organised. maybe put up a post on Beoir and Boards plus a poster or two in the Malthouse and pubs in Navan that sell craft beers.

was a chap from Navan posted here last year but not to many more.

I've a cousin from Kells who has recently been shoved into Home brewing by his nordy cousin. I can point him in your direction.

I'm going to put a tweet out too and see.

Those two lads were keen, the Chef in the Central is a homebrewer also, and think another one of their staff also.

I'll suss out the locals and go from there.

Will put something on Boards, and Beoir.

We could ask Archie from Smyths in the square, he may be interested, or while we're getting it going my father has said we re welcome to use the bar in his house in Garlow cross every now and again, only issue there is it's out of town

I'm meeting Mick Gavigan in the Central later so can bring it up with him, he seemed keen before. Arthur in Smyth's would probably be happy enough too.

So far we have

1: Irishbeersnob
2: auralabuse
3: TheCavanMan
4: Blueshed
5: Cmore_2

I've a cousin who's into it too - will email him and i'm sure we have a few heads

Think we have enough to start with, now to come up with a name?

Royal County Homebrewers?

Ha. yeah name can follow;

So lads, the Central have confirmed they are more than happy for us to host our meetings there.

Mervyn's Yard with the stove burning away, supping beer. Bliss.

So

First meeting?
Once a month there after and then we need to decide, 1st tuesday of the month?

Anything else?

Count me in! I work shifts so might not always be around for meetings! But I'll try my best! First Tuesday of the month would probably suit me best too.

That's Great lads, I think we should try do a brew once a month as the club and keg it for tasting. This way new comers will become more comfortable with the basics of brewing,  I have taps lines and gas, 3/4 fermenters and trying to get a few cheap cornies, I would like to learn more and have a bit of fun along the way :-\ see ya on the 7th

Oh yea a Name how about Ard RÍ (high kings) home brewing
Title: Re: Meath Homebrew Club
Post by: Will_D on September 04, 2014, 10:59:23 PM
Just a suggestion re. the name:

Its best if there is a clue in the name as to where you are based!

I am Welsh and whilst I appreciate the local Gaelic names like "Ard RÍ" not every one one the site that only have has the "cúpla focal"

BTW: It only took me about 5 mins on Google to get that as the misses is fasters asleep!

You get my drift though - keep it simple and the simples will come ("Simples", Ref Quote: "The Meerkats")

Ok, i'll get back on to the Central, so Tuesday the 7th of October. Shall we say 8pm?
Everyone bring a bottle or two of whatever they have, and we can discuss the set up of the club.

Thanks

Descriptive names can be more helpful. Navan Home Brew Club?
I can't believe there's an objection against calling Meath the Royal county because it's not descriptive, you really couldn't get clearer.  Meath are the Royals, Kerry are the Kingdom and Cork are the Rebels.  It's like, basic geography, man!
Title: Re: Meath Homebrew Club
Post by: Will_D on September 06, 2014, 02:03:13 PM
I don't think there is any objection to the "Royal County Brewers" After all we have the Garden County, The North County to name but a few.

Its your call however. Pick a name for the forum and one of the mods will create it

Why not stick up a poll on this thread or start a new one for the couple of lads who have expressed the interest to vote on.

Once you have a name then you will have a forum. First post on your new forum should be where are we going to meet and when. Then just watch the group grow

There's no point arguing about names at this stage. I've never named something until I got a feel for it. Might be best to leave the name until we have all met and got a feel for what kind of club we are going to be!

I've no experience in a Homebrew club, but I'm excited of the prospect of this. Where will we brew our first batch? What will it be? Exciting times ahead!

Aaaaggggghhhh just chucked a batch of cider, went dreadfully wrong, started fermenting in its own yeast never tried it before so let it go, it was bubbling away for a week started off settling nicely but by the end of the week it was thick and cloudy right through with an acrid smell changed barrels hoping it may clear it a little but Na first ever dumped brew OG was 1055 FG after the week 1020. Think I'll give natural yeast a miss next time

Hi and welcome.

As a certain gentleman used to say "Never say Never"

Have a look here at my intro to the cider making craft:

http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,4308.0.html (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,4308.0.html)

Cider making is a LOT more tricky than brewing beers!

A lot of craft cider makers in Ireland use the natural yeasts. It takes a lot of time and believe me some ealry ferments stink of H2S (Hydrogen Sulphie / Rotten Eggs / fahrts).

You just need to give them time.

If you come down to the Malahide Rugby Club on Sat 4th October I will have some ciders for tasting and will talk the back legs of ye!
