Title: Hobgoblin clone
Post by: googoomuck on September 03, 2014, 08:35:17 PM
Hi guys, I put a hobgoblin clone on Saturday evening. I used a coopers bitter can. A pouch of craft range LME. 50g of both chocolate malt and crystal. I used Nottingham yeast, I have never used this before and misinterpreted the instructions on the label so rather than rehydrating the yeast for 15 minutes I went for 15 seconds before pitching. I pitched @ 20*c. OG was 1040. I took a reading tonight and it's only 1020. Should I hit the panic button and throw in the supplied coopers yeast or leave it be for another few days? Temperature in the utility room is a constant 19*c.

I'd say give it another couple of days. Notty isn't always the speediest for me.

1040 is a bit low for a Hobgoblin clone though! ;)

yeah, just leave it alone and it'll take care of itself.
as it got down from 1.040 to 1.020 the yeast is fine and working away :)

Cheers lads. I'll leave it till Saturday and check again. I didn't mean for it to be a strong brew, are you saying low at 1040 because of the additions or in general for a hobgoblin clone Tom?

Na, the sugars will be right for your ingredients, just that the Hobgoblin clone I've done a couple of times is nearer 1056 - 1060. I think the commercial bottles are 5.4% IIRC. Cracking beer.

Nice one. Yeah I love the stuff too. I just seen the recipe on the coopers web site and thought I'd give it a go. Were your clones extract/all grain?

All grain, though I might have done one extract. Can't remember, it was a while ago now. What SRM/EBC crystal did you use?

It was 82. Which was a stab in the dark (as I don't know what EBC is or stands for, must read a bit more). The web site only stated to use crystal malt. The chocolate malt was 1060.

You weren't far off then! Orfy's clone is the well known one. I think 59-60l is 100-120EBC.

I made that clone from the coopers site ages ago, 'hop gobbler' or something similar I think they called it. I found it had a bit too much chocolate, but otherwise nice

edit:
looking back on my notes it started at 1.047, ended at 1.012, putting it at about 5.2% after priming
Notes say it was a bit too chocolatey fresh and after a year conditioning it was overpoweringly chocolatey.

If you like the Coopers recipes, try the 'Fruit Salad'
It's the Australian Pale Ale kit , crystal/carapils, dryhop 30g amarillo & 30g cascade. kit yeast. Great Beer!

This turned out lovely! I brought a few bottles down to the southeast meet a few weeks ago and the lads liked it (they were surprised that it was a kit hack). Not too sure that's it's that similar to hobgoblin but a nice beer all the same.

As you can see it's quite dark with a nice head and good chocolate/caramel flavour.

That's a fine looking head for a kit beer!

Would also recommend the Coopers APA kit made with a can of coopers amber LME. Lots of american hops and a neutral ale yeast like us-05. Makes a great american amber. Probably the best kit beer i ever did.
