DHL just paid a visit again looking for duty, the Bastids.
Not sure what the score is, I have the goods, so I'm in a strong position for bargaining.

Exactemondo.

Unfortunately my first wife has signed for it.
Time to look for no. 2...

Maybe I could change the number on the front door and confuse them.

I think I'll whizz into a bunch of Yeast Vials, shove them in the box.
I'll refuse to pay so they'll have to take it back.
If you don't pay, they say thay 'auction' it to cover the cost.

Tell them you need someone from their head office to contact you regarding the duty. Then refuse to accept any incoming calls that are tagged "Private Number".

Dredging this up again.
How does April 11th sound?

Siebel kit e80 (refrigerated since it arrived - 6 months shelf life)
Tesco - Coors lite - 2x8x50cl cans - e26.00 x 3 = e78
Disposable glasses
Mineral Water
Crackers
Any printing I can do at work

At most e200 total.

Several sources recommend lower dilution so 750ml beer to a vial
10 x 75ml samples - e20 a head covers it.

Why is there no vomiting smiley?

Have we a venue? Ye can come to my gaff and we can empty the barrel while we're at it?
Title: Re: Sensory training
Post by: johnrm on March 20, 2015, 04:13:56 PM
No venue, was considering the Well, but your place sounds fine.
Table and chairs for 10 would be cool.
Planks and crates would be fine.

This is only sampling so driving should not be an issue, although carpooling is always useful.

Title: Re: Sensory training
Post by: johnrm on March 26, 2015, 07:40:53 AM
There are 24 vials. Allowing 7 mins each, 5 mins plus 2 mins changeover, that's almost 3hrs.
We may not need 5 mins with some, but the time will balance out on discussion.
How does a 7pm start sound?

7pm is fine with me, would the pavlova fall under acetic acid for the tasting depending on whether its made with vinegar or not?

Cash on the day is grand. PayPal if it suits, PM for details.
[Edit:Just did my sums, 20 will do.]

How many off flavours is there?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding this but if we're doing 24 different off flavours in one go it's going to be very hard to remember any of them.

Is it the flavours on this list?

Title: Re: Sensory training
Post by: johnrm on April 01, 2015, 10:38:06 PM
That's pretty much the one.
The kit I have has 24.
1 or 2 differ.
We could split it over 2 sessions if that's what the people want...
Title: Re: Sensory training
Post by: johnrm on April 02, 2015, 11:59:13 AM
We may well split this into 2 sessions.
We will see how we go on the night, I don't want to rush anyone.
If a second night is required I am incloned to do it sooner than later, we will agree this on the night.

First task on the night is to empty the barrel, then down to the tasting.
We will have 2 syphons, so emptying should not take very long.
Make sure you bring buckets/Kegs!

For the tasting, please bring a notebook/paper and pens.
The order will be random and the off-flavours will not be announced.
Once everyone is happy that they have it or not - We announce and discuss.
Title: Re: Sensory training
Post by: LordEoin on April 02, 2015, 01:03:38 PM
why wouldn't we announce the off flavor?
This is starting to sound like a quiz
Title: Re: Sensory training
Post by: johnrm on April 02, 2015, 01:06:16 PM
Because some people will prefer it that way. We can announce after 1 min, that way everyone is happy.

If someone tells you what the taste is its much easier to taste it!

Not knowing what it is really stretches your taste buds and knowledge of the off flavours
Title: Re: Sensory training
Post by: LordEoin on April 03, 2015, 11:23:15 AM
That's what i was thinking, but sure those of us who haven't done it before can just wait the minute until it's announced before tasting. then everyone wins. :)

Well the training has already come in handy, opened a red wine today and noticed a nail polish smell to it and immediately thought  it must be ethyl acetate.

That's a shame. sounds like it's time for that barrel to be retired to my garden, to live it's life out as a planter or maybe a base for a table in the brew shed.

Part of the problem was that the beer just wasn't big enough to handle the barrel, even just the oak.

Maybe for the next barrel.
I'm talking to someone about one...

BTW, I tasted the beer. It smells fine, just tastes sour, not what you want from a lager, but...

Any final words before I dump 40l? Mr. H?
